Description
Seldon Powell Sextet “SPS Featuring Jimmy Cleveland” 1956? Roost 2220 mono.
First the identifying marks for collectors.
- Missing deep groove on label that would clearly signal a first pressing.
- Etched on runout:
Side one: LP-2220-PT-1 RLP-5163-N1 anvil symbol
Side two: LP-2220-PT-2 etched squiggle RLP-5164-N1 anvil symbol
-BUT, missing the date stamps on either side that would signal the second release from 1961.
Usually one can consult the Discogs datebase or some similar resource and know what you have. In this case, while it’s clear this is an early version, Triangle Vinyl Guy could not figure it out. I have been schooled by the larger record collecting community and am still puzzled, and not sure what I have. In any event, it’s full of extremely cool arrangements, and extremely cool playing. Sleeve is in super nice shape straight on, with almost no scuff (see photos), but the spine is damaged in the top quarter or so, so I can’t rate it higher than a Very Good plus (VG+). The vinyl is incredibly nice, nearly perfect both visually and on playback, clearly an Excellent (EX) piece of vinyl. This is a special copy of a special record, missing deep groove notwithstanding. Just cleaned with a VPI wet-vac system. I’ll pay for the shipping via USPS media mail.price rating
