“gainsbourg percussions” was Serge Gainsbourg’s the 6th studio album. Philips released it in 1964 within the series “Les grands Auteurs & Compositeurs Intérprètes”.
The album surrounds the distinction of a not widely known controversy concerning the plagiarism of at least four songs featured on the acclaimed album:
1) “Joanna” is an adaptation of “Kiyakiya” [Kay-Ya-Key-Ya (Why Do You Run Away?)] by the Nigerian musician Babatunde Olatunji (1927-2003).
2) “New York USA” is an adaptation of “Akiwowo” [Ah-Key-Woh-Who (Chant to the Trainman), also by Olatunji.
3) “Marabout” is an adaptation of “Gin-go-lo-ba” [Jin-Go-Low-Bah (Drums of Passion)], once again by Olatunji.
4) For “Pauvre Lola” Gainsbourg used the song “Umqokozo” [A Children's Game Song About A New Red Dress] written by the South African Miriam Makeba (1932-2008).
Twenty years later, in 1984, Gainsbourg was awarded the prize “Grand Prix National 1984” and the artists long time recording label Philips decided to reissue some of his earlier albums and songs, among others “Percussions” revamped with a completely new art design.
