GUITAR GEORGE
Due to moving to a smaller house, I am selling my record collection, which started in the late 50’s. If this particular record is not one you are interested in please let me know which artist/record you may consider buying. If I have it, I can then put it on EBAY. ARTIST. SHORTY LONG
Shorty came to Motown from the Tri-Phi/Harvey Label in 1963. His first release, "Devil With The Blue Dress" was on the Soul subsidiary label. Other single releases included "It's A Crying Shame" (64); "Function At The Junction" (66), "Here Comes The Judge" (68) - his biggest hit reaching #4 R&B and #8 Pop (this tune was also covered by Pigmeat Markham and was also a hit - #4 R&B and #19 Pop - subsequently, Pigmeat's version charted 2 weeks after Shorty's (6/29/68 - Shorty's charted on 6/15); "I Had A Dream" (69); "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (69). LP releases included "Here Comes The Judge" (68); and "The Prime Of Shorty Long" (69) released shortly after his death at the age of 29 in a boating accident on the Detroit River.
Stevie Wonder played the harmonica (which Shorty also played) at his burial (placing it on his casket afterwards). Shorty played many instruments including piano, organ, drums, and trumpet. He acted as an MC during his Motown days at many of the Motortown Revues and tours. He also co-wrote some of his tunes ("Devil With The Blue Dress," "Function At The Junction," and "Here Comes The Judge."). Marvin Gaye, in the book Divided Soul, described Shorty as "this beautiful cat who had two hits, and then got ignored by Motown." Marvin claimed he "fought for guys like Shorty" while at Motown, since no one ever pushed for these artists. When Holland-Dozier-Holland came to Marvin with a tune, he stated, "Why are you going to produce me? Why don't you produce Shorty Long?"
He was a talented, and yet, underrated legend in Soul/R&B music.
