It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please bear that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have a record from Higgs And Wilson (the well-known firm of solicitors) on the prestigious R&B label numbered JB 109.
It features the tunes “Let Me Know” and a Gospel derived up-tempo offering “Bye And Bye”.
Both sides were writ by Higgs and Wilson a.k.a. Ska innovators Joe Higgs and Roy Wilson, and it’s a UK pressing dating from 1963.
It is as rare as a cat with a conscience, or someone off “Love Island” in whose company you could survive more than five seconds without screaming.
This disc is a fine example of Jamaican R&B and deserves a place on your shelves.
It is in (see above red bit) useful playable condition, but has numerous tiny hairline marks from being stored in a box with other sleeveless records. It reproduces loudly and well.
Let’s call it a very strong VG edging up towards VG+, though sounding much better.
Buy now before vendor sobers up.
