Description

You are viewing the following listing:

Artist: Madness

Release: ‘One Step Beyond’

Release year: 1979

Release label: Stiff Records

Release number: SEEZ 17. Record is paper labelled black vinyl 12” debut album and housed within a picture inner sleeve. One Step Beyond... is the debut studio album by the British ska-pop group Madness, released by Stiff Records, released on 19 October 1979. Recorded and mixed in about three weeks, the album peaked at number two and remained on the UK Albums Chart for more than a year.

Format:  this is an official 1979 UK debut album by band ‘Madness’, signed by all seven members! Please note this is super rare to be found with all seven signatures, as at the point of release ‘Chas Smash’ was not an official member of the band at the time of the album's recording or release. Chas would formally join Madness only a few weeks after One Step Beyond... was issued in October 1979. On this basis, Chas is not featured on the front panel artwork and has signed on the reverse of the sleeve.

The following signatures are included:

1.   Chris Foreman – guitar (1976–1986, 1992–2005, 2006–present): has signed ‘Chrissy Boy’ at 7 o’clock towards the base edge of the front panel, in a thick green marker-style pen. Graded 6/10 for definition and ink coverage, as the ink has not fully permeated the high gloss finish to the sleeve and has smudged on the ‘B’ element of ‘Boy’ (see photo).

2.   Graham "Suggs" McPherson – vocals, percussion (1977, 1978–1986, 1992–present): has signed ‘Suggs’ at 2 o’clock in huge letters towards the top right-hand corner of the sleeve, in a fine black biro-style pen. Graded 9/10 for definition and ink coverage (see photo).

3.   Dan Woodgate – drums, percussion (1978–1986, 1992–present): has signed ‘Woody’ at 10 o’clock towards to top left hand edge of the front panel, in a thick green marker-style pen. Graded 8/10 for definition and ink coverage (see photo).

4.   Cathal "Chas Smash" Smyth – bass (1976–1977), vocals, trumpet, dancing (1979–1986, 1992–2014): has signed ‘Chas Smash’ in the middle of the rear panel in a fine black biro-style pen. Graded 9/10 for definition and ink coverage (see photo).

5.   Mark Bedford – bass (1978–1986, 1992–2009, 2012, 2013–present) has signed ‘Bedders’ at 12 o’clock towards the top edge of the front panel in a fine black biro-style pen. Graded 9/10 for definition and ink coverage (see photo).

6.   Mike Barson – keyboards, piano, percussion, backing vocals (1976–1984, 1992–present): has signed ‘Barzo’ at 3 o’clock towards the right-hand edge of the front panel in a fine black biro-style pen. Graded 9/10 for definition and ink coverage (see photo).

7.   Lee Thompson – saxophone, percussion, vocals (1976–1977, 1978–1986, 1992–present): has signed ‘Kix’ plus initials at 8 o’clock towards the left-hand edge of the front panel of the sleeve, in a fine black biro-style pen. Graded at 8/10 for definition and ink coverage (see photo).

Condition: the high gloss picture sleeve is in excellent minus (-) condition, with minimal creasing and minimal edge wear and tiny corner dinks. There is minor age yellowing within the white sections of card. The rear of the sleeve has minor rubbing around the opening edge of the sleeve a moderate corner dink on the rear right-hand corner and a minor loss of black finish. Overall, a very flat, uncreased sleeve and a great example of this forty-five-year-old sleeve. The inner sleeve is in excellent condition with no faults to note other than minimal age yellowing.  The vinyl is in excellent condition with minimal signs of handling. Under harsh halogen lighting, the vinyl has minimal hairlines, one or two very light scuffs and very little evidence of play around the spindle hole. Play grade is in line with visual grade and excellent condition and played once through on my high-end Marantz deck. The signed single on Stiff Record labels is ultra rare fully signed by what would be all seven band members, and would look amazing mounted, framed and glazed.
