Original stereo pressing from 1968 with gold label & thick dark cardboard. Includes original printed Vanguard-logo paper inner sleeve. Eye-catching cover was designed by Fred Holtz & David Gahr (orange, gray & purple!).

  DISC - NM: We give great importance to grading our items accurately. Faint inaudible streak & one-inch fleck across side 1 are easy to miss. Otherwise, no warping, scratches, skips, visible needle wear, scuffs, abrasions or other blemishes on playing surface or dead wax. Disc surface shows very nice gloss.

 COVER - NM:  Truly beautiful: Wee bit of corner banging. No ring wear! Deep rich, unfaded sharp clear color on a nice rich gloss. Virtually no rubbing. No seam splitting. No scuffs, tears, creases, marks, cuts, writing or other blemishes. Spine looks very very good with just a few teeny, faint uncut half crinkles and a one-inch half-crease on the sharp print. We've added a plastic inner sleeve to store the platter. Label looks really great: No writing, stickers or other major blemishes. Full gold color & fairly sharp-cut hole with no spindle scuffs. Print sharpness on first three lines of the label is somewhat blurry, but the other 11 lines of print are nicely sharp. Side two label has a dimple, but it's tiny, about 1/32nd of an inch. "XSV140117-18" on A-side dead wax.

Among the earliest and most influential Delta bluesmen to record, Skip James was the best-known proponent of the so-called Bentonia school of blues players, a genre strain invested with as much fanciful scholarly "research" as any. Coupling an oddball guitar tuning set against eerie, falsetto vocals, James' early recordings could make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Even more surprising was when blues scholars rediscovered him in the '60s and found his singing and playing skills intact. Influencing everyone from a young Robert Johnson (Skip's "Devil Got My Woman" became the basis of Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail") to Eric Clapton (who recorded James' "I'm So Glad" on the first Cream album), Skip James' music, while from a commonly shared regional tradition, remains infused with his own unique personal spirit.
