For auction is a rare and excellent example of the late 60’s (1968) classic from The Small Faces which is, or has become, a Collectors item.

I’ve decided to have a clear out of my overly full collection of Vinyl which is sad, but necessary.

Equally sad is that I vividly remember buying this album – hence no previous owners – all those years ago as just a very small boy!

It is in excellent condition.

OBSERVATIONS ON CONDITION

Sleeve

The sleeve has no tears or rips and is is excellent condition. As a circular gatefold it could be prone to minor tears but this has none.

In an effort to be totally transparent the following are included for the sake of being 100% up-front.

There are marginal signs of minor wear on the very outer edge of the sleeve presumably when I took this album in and out of my collection (even though I did/do take great care!).

On the 1lb Box picture there are two small annotations “374” and “116” which are visible but not offensive! I assume that they were not part of the original design!

The plastic protective inner sleeve is OK. Because it’s circular, the top plastice edge has "crumpled" but it’s more than functional/serviceable. This is a point for the discerning buyers.

LP/Vinyl

The vinyl (Mono) is also in excellent condition. It has been played although not for many years - and not excessively - and looks and plays extremely well.

Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake was a released in 1968 and became a number one hit in the UK Album Charts, where it remained for a total of six weeks.

It is also considered as one of the first concept albums although only the B side (of the original LP) could only probably warrant this claim.

It is an LP of two halves!!

The A-side is a mix of early heavy rock with "Song of a Baker"; psychedelic cockney knees-up songs "Lazy Sunday"; and the soul influenced ballad "Afterglow (of your love)" which was used in the immediate sampler “Immediate Lets You In”.

The B-side is based on an original fairy tale fairy taleabout a boy called Happiness Stan, narrated in his unique ‘Unwinese’ gobbledegook by Stanley Unwin, who picked up modern slang from the band and incorporated it into the surreal narrative.

The Small Faces were a leading force in the mod movement in the early 60's along with The Who, The Kinks and early Spencer Davies. The Small Faces moved from the Decca label to Immediate. 

The LP title and the design was issued in the famous innovative round sleeve, inspired by the Ogdens St Bruno tobacco tin, but apparently with the insertion of the druggy "nut gone" slant.

In 2000 Q magazine placed Ogden's Nut Gone Flake at number 59 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.

The album was originally released on vinyl in a circular novelty package resembling a paper replica of a giant tobacco tin, with a gatefold cover (see pictures) and this is what is up for auction.

One final piece of information is that the award-winning artwork for the album cover was done by Mick Swan who was a product of the sixties art school scene.

Record Details

“There are many re-issues and country versions of this record, as you can read below.

The price depends on the condition, it also depends on whether it’s mono or stereo (mono is rarer and has some different mixes), and it depends on which pressing.

The first pressings of the album are generally reckoned to be exceptionally good....there were both mono and stereo. The first pressings were on the grey Immediate label, then later on the pink label.

It is believed that all the mono LPs are on the original grey label. These releases all said "For amazing results this record should be played at high volume". The copy I’m selling has this on it.

Most re-issues of the stereo version are inferior. For example, in the original master tape, Afterglow is true stereo and segues into Long Ago's. There are differences in later issues.

The second pressings of the original issue were done in 1970. They featured the pink label, had no "Amazing results" printed and were much noisier, inferior pressings.”
