Up for auction here is a very rare FIRST Uk pressing of the second Lp by The Soft Machine simply entitled Volume Two. Released in the Uk in 1969 on Probe records?– catalogue number SPB 1002 This is a very rare first pressing with very early mother stampers and is in SUPERB condition throughout.

Matrix / Runout (A) SPB 1002 A-1G and SPB 1002 B-1G on side 2. The mother stampers are 1G on side 1 and 1G on side 2. This is a very early pressing !

The vinyl is visually in stunning condition and looks barely played. The vinyl has retained its nice deep sheen and does not look 52 years old. Under a very strong light a couple of superficial sleeve removal type are barely visible but I would grade it as visually being in a strong Excellent + condition , a really nice copy. The audio is also very nice and plays through superbly without any skips or jumps. I did not hear any clicks or ticks either. There is some normal very light background crackle but even this is minimal. Overall it was a superb listen and I would grade the audio as

Excellent ++. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to.

The Labels are in great condition with barely any spindle marks visible demonstrating how little this has been played. I would grade them also as Excellent++.

The Original first press Garrod and lofthouse flipback sleeve has some normal light signs of wear but is still a really great example. The spine is clearly legible. The laminate is vibrant with a little ringwear and laminate creasing .The flipback is nice and sharp. I would grade it as a strong Excellent.

The record comes with its original Patent number inner sleeve which is also excellent.

Overall a superb copy of this classic Soft Machine lp.

I use Record Collector ratings to grade my vinyl. These are :

Mint: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

Excellent: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening of sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc..

Fair: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Poor: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc.. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing
