Despite its deceptive title, Solomon Burke’s 1962 “Greatest Hits” is NOT a “greatest hits” album in any sense of the word. Rather, it was a first studio album great soul crooner recorded for the ATLANTIC label (‘If you need me’ would come a few months later); alas, since the album featured a healthy dose of the previously charting hit singles (as Atlantic was apt to do in those days), someone at the label came to the brilliant idea of marketing the album as a “hits” package.
This is an album-proper, and not some kind of cockamamie best-of package. For his first REAL anthology, King Solomon would have to wait another three years, until Atlantic issued now-classic “The Best of Solomon Burke”
