Description

Dr. John's Spin Factory brings you the portion of the band Uncle Tupelo that didn't remake itself as Wilco.  Here's a bit more from Google on the relevant history:

  • Son Volt and Wilco are two sides of the same coin, born from the dissolution of pioneering alt-country band Uncle Tupelo.
  • Farrar/Tweedy Rivalry: Wide Swing Tremolo is often viewed within the context of the artistic competition between Farrar (Son Volt) and Tweedy (Wilco) in the late 1990s as both moved away from traditional country roots.
  • Musical Evolution: While Son Volt's Wide Swing Tremolo leaned into heavier, distorted guitar rock, it directly contrasted with the musical direction Jeff Tweedy was taking Wilco during the same era (e.g., Being There).

I bought my copy of Wide Swing Tremolo new at Flipside Records in Kalamazoo Michigan in 1998.  It saw very light play over the years.  Especially now after ultrasonic cleaning, the vinyl plays like every new record should!  Which is, it sounds great with little surface noise, so that you may enjoy the very fine music, which is quite varied, ranging from grungy, unapologetic guitar rock to sweet, alt-country.  As Allmusic's reviewer Matthew Hilburn wrote... 
Wide Swing Tremolo is a wide-open, rocking album with precious little of the overt country influences found on previous Son Volt works. Instead, this album is driven by R.E.M.-like arpeggio guitar riffs and muscular, warm rhythms. It's a strong album. 
So that you may 'hear for yourself,' I've included a short video clip among the photos that includes sections from the first two songs on side 1.  
This very rare vinyl album will come with a fresh rice paper sleeve and an excellent plastic slipcover.  To ensure against damage to the jacket spine during shipment, the disc will be in its sleeve then placed with the empty jacket in the plastic slipcover.
