• Crawling out of the NYC underground music scene comes Sonic Youth’s first full-length album Confusion is Sex. The band wears their early influences of the avant-garde and No Wave scene proudly, making a record as abrasive as it is challenging. Melody can be heard darting in and out of songs, hiding behind layers of feedback, wailing guitars and sparse tribal drumming. The Songwriting does it’s best to avoid convention and the atonal, low-fi sound fits the time and place of this recording perfectly, serving as a pleasing portrait of the beginnings of the future alternative icons.

• EVOL marks a major turning point for Sonic Youth. A turn towards more traditional rock song structure, helped tremendously by the straight forward, no-nonsense style of new drummer Steve Shelley, and the move to west coast punk rock label SST, helped propel the band into the spotlight in the mid ‘80’s independent rock scene. From the first jarringly beautiful chords of “Tom Violence”, through the mysteries of “Shadow Of A Doubt” and “Green Light” to the outro of  “Expressway To Yr Skull”, a song Neil Young has called the greatest guitar song ever written, Sonic Youth crafts a beautiful journey of light and darkness, of joy and pain, of love and EVOL, paving a clear path toward the critic and fan favorites Sister and Daydream Nation.

• Building on the sound of their previous work, Sonic Youth released Sister in 1987 to critical acclaim. The album has gone on to become a favorite of fans and critics everywhere, landing on numerous best of the 80’s lists and garnering top scores from countless reviews and publications. Easily their most accessible record to this point in the bands history, the band keeps the trademark feedback and noisy soundscapes but combines them with more and more mainstream rock and pop ideas and song structures. Again challenging their listeners but with a far more satisfying and obtainable reward. Inspired by Science Fiction writer Philip K. Dick and his deceased fraternal twin sister, the album, featuring the favorites “Schizophrenia,” Tuff Gnarl” and “Cotton Crown,” explores the mind and prods the emotions, and captures the band ascending to the height of their career.

• Usually representing a bad omen, 1985’s Bad Moon Rising, Sonic Youth’s second full length LP is exactly the opposite. Thick into the New York City No Wave noise rock scene, the band was maturing quickly past it’s contemporaries and showing a promise that they had more to say than loud feedback and alternately tuned noise abominations. Those aspects are still present here, but beneath the swirling vortex of sounds and tribal drumming lie subtle melodies, lurking in the shadows and challenging the listener to find them. Each song segues to the next, connected by layers of feedback and atonal sounds, all leading to the albums powerful closer. Inspired by the Manson Family murders and co-written by the band with NYC scene mainstay Lydia Lunch, “Death Valley ‘69” is a culmination of what the band had been working for. A crushing blast of guitar riffs with more traditional drumming driving the chaos into a hybrid of alternative rock and the noise roots that the band would become known for. The song serves as a great ending to a wild ride, and a perfect lead in to the next stage in the bands story.
