Description

Sonny Red, who's real name was Sylvester Kyner, was one of those promising young jazz musicians who never really found himself musically and ultimately faded into obscurity. I think this cd gives us an indication as to why as Red displays a sort of Jekyll and Hyde musical personality.
Don't judge Sonny Red solely by his late 1960's recordings with Donald Byrd. His earlier efforts fron the early 1960's were much more boppish. He became Riverside records 2nd alto player behind Cannonball Adderley a couple of years after the death of Ernie Henry and produced these 4 albums within a span of a little more than a year and a half. Earlier he had recorded 3 sessions with Curtis Fuller, 2 for Prestige and 1 for Savoy and also did some quintet tracks with Pepper Adams for Regent/Savoy
Sonny Red's first Jazzland album is clearly stamped with his mark. In addition to contributing five of the tunes ( the other three are seldom-heard standards chosen by him), he hand picked the very good company in which he plays. Barry Harris, Yusef Lateef, Blue Mitchell, Albert Heat,
and Bob Cranshaw.
