Huey (Sonny) Simmons, Born on Sicily Island, Louisiana in 1933, started his reed studies at 10 after moving to the Bay area of California by playing the double reed English Horn and picked up the alto at 16. While he continues to play both horns, this album features his alto work which is noted for his distinctive "Birdlike" tone While his solo work reflects the free influences of Ornette, Dolphy and other free players of the 60's. Along with Sonny, his wife Barbara Donald is featured on trumpet. Strongly influenced by Booker Little, Barbara is a voice unto herself with a sharp attack and abstract harmonics executed with intensity that belies her softer sex. Sonny and Barbara often worked on complex unison and harmonic  lines that they would develop into their original tunes such as "Back to the Apple" and the other tunes heard here. How can you go wrong with Billie Higgins who was at the forefront of the Free movement and certainly belongs here. Just as Ornette would use Charlie Hayden on one channel and Scotty LaFaro on the other channel (Free Jazz, Atlantic), Sonny uses Bill Pickens on the right with Jerry Sealund on the left channel performing bass duties. Mike Cohen drops in from the Charles Lloyd band to lend a harmonic keyboard framework. This album is a great example of the abstract but swinging 60's groups that were searching for a new way to escape the traditional Eastern hard bop Blue Note sound that was more often heard at Jazz venues from coast to coast. 

If you have big ears that can stretch out, this album will definitely stretch them while Higgins lays down a solid groove to keep your foot tapping.
