Soul Brothers – ‘Hi-Life’ / Delroy Wilson ‘Close To Me’ – Island 3039 (UK)

Studio One double! Two magnificent Coxsone sides, back to back. ‘Hi-Life’ was also recorded by the Granville Williams Orchestra, but this version is a lot heavier. ‘Close To Me’ – penned by Dan Penn and modelled after The Tams’ version off their Presenting The Tams album, which also included gems like ‘Riding For A Fall’ and ‘Dancing Mood’ (all covered by Delroy Wilson as well, of course) – is simply sublime (listen to Jackie Mittoo answering Delroy’s vocals).

Condition: Excellent; the Soul Brothers side perhaps a notch below that grade (please check the sound files). A lovely copy. Ever so slightly worn labels, the Delroy Wilson side has a barely legible name written with a marker pen (please see scans).
