Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites 1 - 6

Soloist:  Janos Starker

This set is a promo copy (stamped inside box cover).. All of the pressings are RFR-1 making (earliest pressing in the Mercury plant in Richmond, Indiana. As a gold ("yellow") label promotional pressing, it is one of the earliest out of the stampers.

Note that this is the monaural version (single-mike technique) recording.  It could be argued that with a solo instrument, closely recorded as this set is, this would be little different from the stereophonic version.  I own two stereophonic sets of this recording and would make the following observations: (1) there is more "room" noise heard in the stereophonic version: (2) the stereophonic "image" tends to wander a little more.  Otherwise, the full-bodied response of this recording is perfectly preserved.

Caveats with nearly all Mercury recordings: They have some surface noise which varies from record to record.  Among the audiophile issues, they tend to be noisy (as are a number fof the RCA "shaded dogs") and the earlies London/Deccas.  These records appear to have no significan surface flaws or spindle marks.  They are in their original plastic sleeves.  The accompanying booklet is clean with no marks.

I have owned this recording since 1965 and have carefully stored it in my archives. Please note that this is a reserve auction.  Due to the value of this set, I would suggest that the winning bidder insure his or her purchase.

I will sell to domestic and qualified overseas buyers.
