Description
Boogamambobeat Records Presents: Specially for You: Steve Hernandez The Booga Mambo Beat on Latino Records. Here is your chance to own this record which is posted with no reserve! I have included at the bottom of this page 5 generous samples taken from the very LP for sale, without any digital manipulation.
I have spoken to Ray Santos about this record, and this is story he told me. Steve Hernandez was not a musician, but rather, a great music fan who pulled together Puerto Rico's all star players for this vanity recording. Ray told me that Steve had come into some money following a settlement for an accident that had left Steve wheelchair-bound. Steve spared no expenses for this production and it was a dream to assemble the players. You will hear Juancito Torres prominently on the trumpet throughout this recording. Incidentally, This record was reissued with the wrong vocals tracks on the Triunfo label with a shortened version of Steve's Impact and without Steve's Boogaloo (see my other auction of Charlie Rodrigues also featuring Vitin Aviles). The one I offer for sale is the original--a collectable not only for descarga heads (Steve's Impact), but also boogaloo (Steve's Boogaloo) as well as guaguanco (Guaguanco Pa' Borinquen).
About the condition. This record is always hit or miss on the condition. While most copies sound great, many have "bubble" problems. I have seen copies littered with small bubbles, and I have also seen big monster bubbles that definitely affect play. The one offered for sale does not have a buble problem and sounds great. Side A is vg and shows a large spindle mark (It is NOT a needle mark, and it is lightly feelable only on the Chocolate track) going across the last 3 tracks (look at my enhanced picture of the mark below). Fortunately, these are a bolero, a guaracha and a merengue, and while not all of the mark tics, there are some at the beginning of the cover of Chocolate. I have included a sample of this cut, and as you can hear, they are not distracting once the music starts. The rest of side A sounds wonderful! and without the spindle mark, it would be a solid vg+ for this side. Side B is problem free and is a solid visual vg+, but sounds even better!!! Cover is as shown. This is the perfect copy for DJ's loud clean sound that will shake the dance floor!!!
As for whatever happened to Steve Hernandez. I have heard from a couple of people that he moved to NY's Spanish Harlem and was a fixture at the local record stores, wheelchair and all, through the end of the 70's.
Don't forget to check out my other records for auction this week. Great lot for DJ's and collectors, offering guanguaco, salsa, descarga, boogaloo, mambo jazz!!!
Please listen to samples below. There are 5 samples! You may have to use the elevator button on the right to display all samples-- Don't miss Steve's Impact, it is the fifth sample!. If you have any difficulties accessing the samples, please contact me. As always, please note that the low quality samples have been taken from the actual record posted for sale, without any digital clean up.
