Rare lp featuring 3 great musicians on these experimental works. This unique recording of Spiral has the Zen monk Michael Vetter employing his extended playing techniques on recorder while tuning into accompanying distorted sounds on a short wave radio (the score tells the performer to keep searching for a signal until finding one that corresponds to the instrumental notes). Zyklus is performed by the Fluxus-associated sound installation artist and percussionist Max Neuhaus; the piece uses non-traditional notation to indicate relative pitch, duration, and dynamics and involves an array of African, eastern, and western percussions and mallet instruments. Frederic Rzewski performs the piano work.

German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal. • Max Neuhaus studied under Paul Price, worked as an avant garde percussionist with Pierre Boulez, Stockhausen, Fluxus artist Nam June Paik, and Alvin Lucier, and later became a sound installation artist and expert in sound psychology. • Vetter is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, painter, and Zen monk known for performing and recording mostly improvisatory works by Sylvano Bussotti, Mauricio Kagel, Gyorgy Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Toru Takemitsu, as well as his own solo lps on Wergo; he plays recorder, tambura, and vocals. • Rzewski is best known as a founding member of early electronic improv groups Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV) with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum and Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza with Roland Kayn, Ennio Morricone, and Franco Evangelisti; he studied under Walter Piston, Roger Sessions, Milton Babbitt, Luigi Dallapiccola, and Elliott Carter, and as a pianist he is also a renowned performer of avant garde works by John Cage, Pierre Boulez, Christian Wolff, Anthony Braxton, Mauricio Kagel, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
