Description
This rare LP – released by Free Music Production as SAJ-41 – features a stunning line-up of the UK's leading improvising musicians of the 1980s:
- trumpets & flugelhorns: Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Dave Spence
- trombones: Paul Rutherford, Alan Tomlinson, Paul Nieman
- tuba: Melvin Poore
- saxophones & clarinets: Trevor Watts, Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Larry Stabbins, Tony Coe
- violin: Phil Wachsmann
- piano: Howard Riley
- double basses: Barry Guy, Peter Kowald
- percussion: Tony Oxley, John Stevens
Although the pieces on the LP were composed by Barry Guy under the title "Four Pieces for Orchestra", each focussing on specific instrumental groupings/soloists or the full ensemble, the 18 top-notch players all contribute enormously in the realisation of the music. As Barry Guy explains, "the music on this album, whilst structured, has life only in the musicians that dedicate their life to improvised music".
The LP is in very good condition [as defined at Discogs] from close visual inspection – if I wasn't very careful in my descriptions, I'd call it near mint condition. The sleeve is also in very very good condition, pretty much as good as new: one tiny price sticker on the front, and one tiny sticker from a Dortmund record shop on the top right corner of the rear sleeve
The median price for this LP on Discogs is over £67, but it has sold for over £150!! As I wish to clear some space in our new house, I'm putting this special LP up for sale, plus packing and postage at cost - that works out at £6.50 within the UK, and includes special stiffened LP packaging and signed-for delivery, so we know it's going to get to you safely and securely.
