Description

Relatively grounded LP from the interstellar jazz-master Sun Ra (and his Arkestra). The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra dates from 1961, and captures Ra in a jazzy, and indeed tuneful mood! You could probably even get away with playing this in the background whilst eating supper with your parents! Very nice.

Stylistically there's so much going on in this record. Obviously swing, bop, and free-jazz elements are ever present, but there are also hints of Latin, World, and even 20th century chamber music heard here. There's even a close to traditional-sounding ballad, "Tapestry From An Asteroid", and a standard (of sorts), "China Gates," as made famous by Nat King Cole from the movie of the same name. At certain points, you can't imagine that the sounds you're hearing really could be made by earthlings.

60th anniversary edition of the 1962 studio album by the American jazz musician. 'The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra' was the first record to be recorded by a pared-down Arkestra after Sun Ra and the core of his group left Chicago and relocated to New York City.
