Sylvia Thomas – ‘At Last’ / ‘So Will I’ – Bamboo 101 (US)
No introduction necessary: this is the first release on Gene Chandler’s wonderful Bamboo label – based in St. Louis but devoted to releasing almost exclusively Chicago artists – home of wonderful records by The Voice Masters, Lee Charles, and The Profiles, as well as Mel and Tim, whose ‘Backfield In Motion’ was the company’s biggest seller). ‘At Last’, penned by Lee Charles and Karl Tarleton, is simply beautiful (I love the line “Good fortune has finally smiled on me”). ‘So Will I’, actually the A-side, is great, too, in a deep soul mode. This ZTSC-stamped styrene copy is, I believe, from the first run; later releases had a more elaborated label design.Condition: VG+ visually with some scuffs; plays better (please listen to the clips). Clean but worn labels (please see scans).
