Label/Format: Fly.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. One of my personal favourite label designs and they don’t get seen much cleaner than this with no grubbiness or fingermarks. This is a very impressive copy.

Cat Number: HIFLY 2.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good weight for this record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce with a record and cover in this condition. With it’s somewhat unusual half-size front flap ‘gatefold’ format (the guides call it a semi-gatefold), this is very vulnerable to catching and so often is seen torn, creased with tatty burred and frayed edges – this one has survived undamaged and has little wear. Just look at that superb picture of Bolan and Finn.

Brief Info: Marc Bolan is an ever-popular artist and still very much in demand, finding the earlier albums in anything like top conditions is never easy. The first album to have the contracted name T Rex – this duo were formerly Tyranosaurus Rex. This T Rex ‘debut’ is not laden with hit singles and this was the transition album into the famous glam-rock band they later became. The big success and major breakthrough came with the classic Electric Warrior and subsequent albums, this one is nowhere as easy to find as the real Glam albums, especially the early pressings in top conditions. This is a superb all-round copy and includes a heavy pressed record that plays superbly. The unusual format cover is seldom seen devoid of wear and damage and this is equally impressive. A package to please most Bolan vinyl collectors needing this – it could prove to be a significant upgrade copy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (at least, this is a very difficult sleeve to find anything like this attractive and devoid of heavy wear or damage). A ‘semi-gatefold’ format and unlaminated with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front ‘Flap’: Highly vulnerable to damage and wear but this looks very impressive with just one half moon surface crease and a few ultra fine surface traces seen under light. Clean edges with no burring or fraying and no rubbing worthy of note.

Front and Inner: The front right has very fine surface marks and only very faint rub traces, these over-emphasised by my camera flash. The inside areas are fantastic with little to fault at all.

Cover Back: Superb and highly attractive with barely any hints of wear at all, I do not think I have seen this look better. The lack of rubbing, creasing and especially, ringwear is hugely significant.

Top Edges: The flap edge is unfeathered and sharp, that is never common to see. The main cover top has hardly any traces of wear or thickening at all.

Bottom Edges: Mainly similar to above with just some fine rubbing on the back towards the right hand side.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This edge includes the text ‘T REX’ and the HiFly catalogue number, this is fully intact and strong with practically no erosion – this on quite a fine surface, so this will again not be seen so often. This highly delicate edge has a few light patchy rubs but overall, very solid and neat.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight but like all others I have seen, it has a tilt to the right. The top fold has a neat fine rub and few will ever avoid this. As it acts as the hinge for the front flap the top fold line will always wear a little (at least). The bottom fold line has no wear and the spine itself shows very little wear and the important artwork design is little affected by the folds as can be seen on my opened out picture picture. This traditional spine side has no text printed, only graphic.

Corners: All corners show a little light rubbing which will hardly be any great surprise on a dark cover like this but only minimal with fine, very neat shape remaining intact.

Cover Summary: Highly delicate and fragile and a very strong all-round example that will never be easy to find a great deal better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white solid, unlined inner that has aged little. Mild darkening of the seam adhesive and a small toned area. That apart, little else to fault with barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): the few ‘spindle searching’ marks on the labels do not reflect on this stunning playing surface of this beautiful record that appears almost unmarked. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any surface sounds at all and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will match or outperform this early Fly pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this very early T Rex record. This copy will prove very difficult to ever find better and merits strong recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
