Here are some reviews:
Incredibly heavy and well produced rock album full of powerful drums, melodic riffs and great vocals! Very good!
I can't believe I've gone so long without discovering this album. This is ridiculously heavy for 1971. Before I listened to this album, the reviews I read made me think that it was going to be "unoriginal" or "almost heavy metal". Those sentiments couldn't be further from the truth. First of all, you have to place this album's sound into context. The year of release was 1971! I realise that "heavy metal" exploded after Black Sabbath's early 1970 debut, but what most people don't take into account is that early 70's "heavy metal" was mostly as heavy as Grand Funk and Led Zep. Looking back, virtually all of those "heavy metal" bands were so light and bland that we remember them (rightfully) as plain hard rock. After doing a bit of filtering, you only get a handful of bands that were actually heavy enough to be heavy metal. Well, this is one of those few albums that rank right up there with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Night Sun, and Bang (among several others) in terms of heaviness.
This album's originality is greatly underestimated. Remember, this is 1971! Real heavy metal was not that common in those days! In fact, this was the first year in history that the term "heavy metal" came into use as a musical genre (replacing the term "heavy rock"). And even with all the other heavy metal albums around, this album has it's own distinct sound. Obviously they were influenced by contemporary metal bands, but you can't point to any particular guitar tone or riff and say that they stole it from this band or that band. In that sense, this is a completely original album. Try saying that about ANY "traditional" heavy metal album from the mid-70's and beyond.
Every song is memorable and heavy. "Woman for Sale" and "I'm Glad" are the heaviest tracks (I defy you to listen to these tracks and deny them the term "heavy metal"). They even sprinkle wah solos throughout! "Lay It on Me" is the only track that resembles their debut "Piggy Go Getter", with that boogie rhythm punctuated by the prominent piano riff.
In summary: Very highly recommended!
Great and underated hard and proto-heavy album. Really excellent production, great sound and great playing. Brilliant guitar, bass and drum work, good compositions and really a great hard combo. This album was produced in 1970 but the quality of the sound and of the musicianship could have been made later. In some songs sounds very heavy for the time and with a really "killer" guitar sound. Hard Rock and Heavy Rock in its best. Very, very recomended !!!!!!
