New York legends Television may have emerged from the CBGB-oriented punk rock scene in the 70s and been hugely influenced by the revolutionary potential of DIY culture, but musically they were making stuff that was a lot more challenging and complex than your run-of-the-mill barre chord punk. Key to their sound is the interlocking guitars underpinning Tom Verlaine's voice; their captivating style was maverick in its day and truly remains an art-punk high water mark. The palpable sense of conviction you get from hearing this tight set of eight tracks comes as the band had road tested these songs repeatedly so when it came to getting it right in the studio they absolutely nailed it. The title-track is a ten-minute odyssey that nods to the transcendent influence of prog greats Yes. Meanwhile, 'Guiding Light' has an air of Lou Reed and The Stones about it without being pastiche. A lot of modern bands have come along and tried to try to shape themselves in this band's image and given how seductive they sound, who can really blame them?
