Terry Reid

'River'

Atlantic, UK, 1973

K40340

ONE OF the greatest vocalists of all time...and one of the most overlooked works of genious lost to obscurity. Of course he'll always be known as the man who turned down the lead vocalist job in Led Zeppelin in favour of persuing a solo career which ran aground when producer and mentor Micky Most blocked him from leaving the label and signing elsewhere.

Reid spent almost 3 years being hung out to dry before legendary Atlantic records boss Ahmet Ertegun came along to rescue him from this ongoing nightmare. A big patron of the arts, Ertegun gave Reid free reign to make an album of his own design...cue another 2 years of total madness. Reid spent more time obsessing about this record, scrapping and restarting it several times before Ertegun stepped in and finally pulled the plug.

Deeper and more touching than Van Morrison, wider in scope than any Neil Young opus and more crazy than Syd Barrett's post Floyd output, the work here is sheer genius. Above it all is Reid's fiercely distinctive vocals - a huge roar at times and then, in the blink of an eye, a soft gentle whisper aided and abetted by material that simply lets him fly. Produced, in the main, by Tom Dowd and backed by guitar legend David Lindley and Conrad Isidore on drums the tracks have room to live and breathe whilst Reid takes each groove and literally wrestles it to the floor. The feel is triumphant - the sound of a man in total control of his art and songs that have only now become accepted as works of true brilliance.

If you've never heard this album and you want to be shocked then please be my guest and bid. I make no apologies for stating that Terry Reid is a god like virtuoso. There I've said it!

Lovely UK copy - really great shape.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
