TERRY RILEY "In C" FRENCH PRESS, TOP COPY UNPLAYED/MINT

FULLY LAMINATED SLEEVE - SUPERB MINIMALIST MASTERPIECE

TERRY RILEY
In C

Performed by Terry Riley with members of The State University Center of Creative and Performing Arts
Recorded at 30th Street Studio, New York City, 1968

FRENCH CBS RECORDS (CBS 34 61 237) PRESSING OF TERRY RILEY'S GORGEOUS "In C" LP - a landmark composition in the history of minimalist music and in 20th century music in general and often cited as the first minimalist composition
FIRST PERFORMED ON NOVEMBER 4th 1964 (this is the first studio recording of the work) AND BEST DESCRIBED BY ALFRED FRANKENSTEIN IN THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE AT THE TIME: "CLIMAXES OF GREAT SONORITY AND HIGH COMPLEXITY APPEAR AND ARE DISSOLVED IN THE ENDLESSNESS - AT TIMES YOU FEEL YOU HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING ALL YOUR LIFE LONG BUT LISTEN TO THIS MUSIC AND AS IF THAT IS ALL THERE IS OR WILL EVER BE"

AND THIS COPY IS IN BEAUTIFUL, UNPLAYED CONDITION (there are no spindles or signs of use to the labels and the vinyl surfaces are unmarked and shine like new) AND IT DELIVERS FLAWLESS SOUND (ON MY SYSTEM - AT A VERY LOUD VOLUME) WITH A TREMENDOUS CRYSTAL CLEAR, CLEAN, BRIGHT LOUD CUT - STUNNING SHARPNESS AND CLARITY TO THIS PRESSING - THE BEST I HAVE HEARD - FANTASTIC COPY OF A SPLENDID AND IMPORTANT WORK

THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE FULLY LAMINATED CBS "MUSIC OF OUR TIME" SLEEVE - UNIQUE TO THIS FRENCH PRESSING

It may also be illuminating at this point to paraphrase David Toop from his excellent book "Ocean of Sound":

In their search for absolutes, a number of music critics have looked to Riley as the definitive starting point for various trends: minimalism, extreme repetition, all-night trance improvisations and tape-delay systems. Pieces such as In C, A Rainbow In Curved Air, and Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band were important in their time because they signalled two important changes in the way the worlds of music and commerce worked.
One: a composer was writing pieces which had grooves and improvised around modes (just like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and half the rock bands in Psychedelia), which sounded as if psychotropics had been involved at some stage of the compositional process, which explored new technology and studio processing.
Two: the albums were packaged by Columbia/CBS as rock albums, so implying that the razor wire dividing so-called classical, rock, jazz, art and commerce had been cut in a few places.
Essentially modest, Riley downplays all of this. After all, his contribution to the late 20th Century mix emerged out of collaborative work and improvisations with La Monte Young, Pauline Oliveros and Chet Baker.
After the first flush of enthusiasm for minimalism and systems music, Riley tended to be dismissed as an old hippy, past this peak, while Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams and Michael Nyman slid with varying degrees of compositional credibility into a new orthodoxy of avant-garde populism. But as Riley says, life goes in cycles and suddenly, the open works of Riley seem more expansive, more useful to the fractured nature of music in the present day than ever before.

Track Listing:
Side 1: In C (part I) (23'50)
Side 2: In C (part II) (19'10)

LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with no evident spindles or signs of use - in my opinion this copy may have never been played - MINT
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces are unmarked and shine like new - MINT
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality - clean, sharp, warm and vibrant and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks/pops and no surface noise. The LP is beautifully recorded with stunning clarity (easily the finest pressing I have heard of this work - the loud cut gives the recording a tremendous immediacy) and it plays to the highest possible standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion (possibly never been played) and is critically graded MINT for audio (it's flawless) - this is a really fantastic copy
SLEEVE: The fully laminated cover is also in exceptional condition with a beautiful deep, glass-like gloss to the laminated surfaces and crisp, sharp edges and spine - NEAR MINT
