THE ASH – FLY UP TIGHT / SAD OVER YOU (ABC PROBE CP-451) (PROMO) (EX-)

From Los Angeles, CA, this group started out as the Twilighters in the mid-sixties, changed their name to The Ash circa 1967 and started playing the big clubs on the Sunset Strip. Their sole release under this moniker is a phenomenal single, and both sides of this 45 are nothing short of awesome.  Fly Up Tight features a swirling organ patched through a Leslie speaker making it a pretty good bet that the volume level was cranked in the recording studio.  A wild fuzz guitar lead pops in at the very end of the song, but only lasts a few bars, leaving the listener to fantasize about what this group must have sounded like live.  The song is credited to Lawson & (Dave) Norup and produced by Blackheart Music Co. The flip-side, Sad Over You, credited to Jack Schoolar, is a moody rocker in a minor key, drenched in reverb and other assorted mania.  After this recording, they continued gigging, and got connections to record a full LP in 1970.  They had to wait a while for its release for quite a few months into 1971 and prior to it coming out, they opted to change their name to Shotgun Ltd.  The LP showed them branching out into other genres like Prog and harder rock and was produced by Dave Hassinger.  But unfortunately the LP didn’t sell well and the record company passed on a second LP.  Both songs were featured on Voyages/U-Spaces comps 15 years ago and have never been comped since, which blows my mind.  This promo copy is in very good condition, graded as VG++.  Check out the scans and audio samples.
