Here's a record by The Band that goes right back to their beginning, before they had a group name. They originally got together as the backup band for Dylan's 1966 tour, finding their way to Woodstock where they worked on the sessions that would eventually be released as 'the Basement Tapes.'

This was their first release for Capitol in August of 1968. The cumbersome credit has the entire group named: Jaime Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm.  The songs here are "The Weight" and "I Shall Be Released," both from their soon-to-be-legendary Lp Music From Big Pink, which was an indirect outgrowth of the Basement Tapes.

This album, enigmatically named and packaged, sounded like nothing else being done by anybody in music when it was released in July of 1968 and the Band became one of the most talked about phenomenon in rock music

This is one of the longest band names ever to appear on a hit single.
