There was seven months between Good Vibrations and the next new Beach Boys material, Heroes and Villains, the real leadoff single to the album.  So how does Smiley Smile live up as the successor to Pet Sounds or, for that matter, the Smile recordings?  Although it's safe to say well over half the tracks are direct or indirect variations on what would be Smile tracks, all tracks with the exception of Good Vibrations are stripped back from their original form.  Not simply stripped back in comparison to Pet Sounds, but serious minimalism.  Some tracks verge on being nothing more than home demos.  It is such a contrast to the band's evolving style and the Smile recordings that, in some respects, it is almost baffling how this got made.  However, that's not to say by any means that this is a trainwreck.  It takes some serious adjusting, but this is the Beach Boys at their weirdest and most psychedelic.  The way the still beautiful voices play against rough tracks and a puddle of great ideas makes for quite a listen.  Moreover, the snippets of actual Smile sessions are fantastic.  What you end with is an undoubtedly fascinating and curious album in the band's catalogue, one that was sure to confuse fans and the public alike (hence, the commercial collapse of the band) but that contains material to treasure all the same.     It is never boring, there contains no filler in the sense that the early albums, and the music is at times transcendent.  I wouldn't take it over the now handsomely packaged Smile Sessions, but it's tough to compare almost any album against what just might be the Beach Boys at their finest and Brian stretching his songwriting and production ability to the point where it cannot be topped as he did on Smile.  At any rate, it is almost hard to believe how much of a different place the band was in musically than they were three years prior.

Smiley Smile is also the last album until 1977 that Brian Wilson is the man behind each and every track, although he remained the dominant force for two more albums and his subsequent remain impressive.  Contrary to the narrative sometimes put out there, Brian was not yet a bedridden recluse and he certainly was not done musically even if Pet Sounds may have been his most surehanded and complete product.

 

This truly superb copy is housed in CLEAN, LAMINATED flipback sleeve, with a strong spine and no cracking or splitting. The vinyl has a bright, pleasing lustre indicating a lack of use. There are some minor very light paper scuffs visible only under very bright light but the record plays with virtually no surface noise, no skip, no jumps - a superb copy - EXCELLENT+ condition.

 

You will be hard pressed to find a better copy than this one!

Grading Guide:

 

"MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

 

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

 

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

 

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

 

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
