Description
Here's a beautiful copy of a single by The Beach Boys: "Surfin" b/w "Luau" (Candix 331). released in 1961. This was the group's very first release, and this issue is the first of several. Candix 331 was followed by X 301, then three versions of Candix 301.
A side written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. B side written by Bruce Morgan, son of Hite Morgan and Dorinda Morgan, who produced these sessions.
It's possible that the "wienie" who wrote his/her name on the A side label was a Hawthorne, California local (or a South Bay resident in general). As Beach Boys fans know, the Wilsons and Loves lived in Hawthorne and the boys attended Hawthorne High. Those who grew up in that city during that time, the 1950s and early 1960s, will recall that the Oscar Mayer "wienermobile" would drive through town frequently and Oscar the driver would give away "wienie whistles" (Oscar Mayer purchased the Southern California Meat Packers plant in 1951). Also, "wienie roasts" at the beach were popular with teens. So whoever owned this record had a culturally and historically specific nickname.
This record is in gorgeous condition, with name written on the A side label. There appears to be a pressing error, as both of the labels have faded printing off-center. It is more visible on the "Luau" side. Could be a storage issue, if not a pressing issue. Otherwise, this is a nice copy. I would give it VG+ to VG++ condition. Only a few very light scuffs, mostly on the "Luau" side. Plays beautifully, clean and loud. Nice gloss and no warping. Labels have no stickers or tears. Strikingly bright colors on the Candix logo.
