THE BEATLES BOX UK 1980 World Record Club 8 x VINYL LP BOX SET
The Beatles Box.
1980 UK pressed World Record Club eight-album box set, SM 701-8.
This set was compiled and sold by World Records, EMI's mail order division and never commercially released in the United Kingdom.
The set consists of 124 Beatles tracks arranged chronologically from Love Me Do, the group's first Parlophone single, to Her Majesty, the final cut on Abbey Road.
The albums are all on the black and silver "two box" EMI/Parlophone label, and each LP is untitled. The sleeves feature previously unpublished colour photos of the Beatles to the front panels and extensive liner notes to rear panels. The box is in the design of a wooden packing crate.
The set features some unusual and scarce track differences:
- Across The Universe - (Version 2) produced by Phil Spector. All My Loving - begins with five taps on Ringo's "hi-hat" cymbal.
- All You Need Is Love - the mono version.
- And I Love Her - contains six bars of acoustic guitar in the fadeout instead of the usual four.
- Baby You're A Rich Man - the true stereo version, previously found just on the German Magical Mystery Tour LP.
- The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill - appears as it does on The Beatles ("white album"), minus the opening guitar obbligato.
- The End/Her Majesty - the pause between the two songs lasts for only five seconds. On Abbey Road, the time between tracks is fifteen seconds.
- Get Back - the album version, produced by Phil Spector.
- I'm Only Sleeping - the extremely rare version with the slightly delayed guitar solo, previously found just on the U.S. stereo eight-track tape edition of "Yesterday" And Today.
- I Am The Walrus - the composite version put together by Capitol Records engineers John Palladino and George Irwin for the U.S. commercial Rarities.
- I Feel Fine - the true stereo version that begins with tapping drum sticks, whispering, coughing and Ringo closing his "hi-hat" cymbal.
- Let It Be (Version 2) "reproduced for disc" by Phil Spector.
- Love Me Do - (Version 1) the rare one with Ringo on drums.
- Penny Lane - the composite version from the U.S. commercial Rarities.
- She's A Woman - the true stereo version previously available just in Australia and in Singapore/Malaysia/Hong Kong.
- Strawberry Fields Forever - the true stereo version.
- Thank You Girl - the original mono version without John's extra harmonica fills.
- This Boy - the mono version.
In generally clean and bright condition. Spider trail marks around the spindle areas of the LPs indicate a set which has been little and carefully played. With the exception of the first LP, vinyl is overall a strong EX, and displaying just a very few superficial hairline scuffs. The first LP shows a greater amount of hairline scuffs, visible when the LP is rotated beneath a light source. None of the marks are deep however, and playback is very clean throughout, with this disc having just some minor and low-level crackle at run-ins and occasionally at band separators. The tracks all play cleanly and without noticeable crackle, ticks or clicks.
Sleeves are generally at least EX throughout. They show little signs of having been handled or poorly stored outside of the box. Still glossy and with no edge wear or seam splits. There are some natural pinch line and half moon creases to the surface laminate however.
Outer box is VG, strictly graded. Front and rear panels and inner panels are free of marks or loss. There is, however, a circular ring stain to the top right of the front panel (around the "Express" sticker). The size of this suggests that it is peripheral residue remaining from a removed price sticker rather than a mug or cup ring stain. There is some splitting and scuffing to joints and peripheral areas. All four edges of the top lid are split, and there is some surface fraying at these areas. There is a small piece of surface material loss to the split at bottom left corner. Else, although detached, the surface material at the other splits is all intact and restoration/repair is possible.
All in all, while not mint a very acceptably clean set.
