Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label/Format: Parlophone with matt, very gently textured surfaces with embossed ‘K T’ tax codes on side two. All the text information denotes a ‘first’ pressing as seen on my label pictures.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of fine and faint spine marks each side. The tax codes ‘K’ but ‘T’ easily seen and totally unworn. The record plays superbly, including the difficult song ‘Yesterday’ which so often gives problems with clarity. A lovely clean mono record that appears hardly played.

Rarity: All standard Beatles albums sold in vast numbers. However, hardly played mono copies are seen far less often. Condition is a huge factor, most were played heavily, often to near destruction on the most basic of record players. Clean copies are becoming increasingly more difficult to find, and those that still play superbly on more revealing equipment are at more of a premium.

Brief Info: The fifth Beatles album with side one featuring songs from the film of the same name, side two has seven non-movie tracks. The America version only included songs from the film including instrumentals, many considered this a bad idea, especially as the magnificent ‘Yesterday’ was omitted. Few fans and collectors will not know all they need to know about this 1965 album. Condition is the paramount factor, and this first format copy plays superbly.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single format with front laminate, this wraps around all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and fairly smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. This is the correct first issue outline stereo cover as seen on the top right of the front. Includes the original tracing paper lined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: An attractive front, and for a very popular record this great age, this has fared supremely well. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of any dulling and no lifting. The odd tiny corner tip rub (bottom right) and some fine edge hairlines that few can hope to avoid totally, these amongst the very least I have seen on this cover. This even lacks the usual half moons and a fine looking white surface, often these yellow and tone over time which this has largely avoided. So barely enough to remind of its considerable age and a front that will prove very difficult to find better.

Cover Back: Also impressive with the exposed main panel aged little, any blemishes or marks minimal, hardly any in fact. Just a mild creases near the bottom left corner. All three flipbacks are solid, unlifted with minimal creasing to the laminate protection, just the aforementione one, this amongst the least I have seen on a Beatles album this age. Their ends are crisp and neat with no thickening or burring. The lack of grime or grubbiness on the laminate ends is always good news as well. An impressive back to match the quality front.

Top Edge: Unworn with smooth unscuffed laminate, not quite straight with slight bowing that again is hard to avoid.

Bottom Edge: As above and straighter with little to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean with a little thickening viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Totally unworn or aged, Very solid with only a gentle hint of natural bowing being a little critical with barely any compression, a hint of tapering to the ends in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this centred almost perfectly as-seen.

Corners: A very small tip rub to the bottom right, minimal traces on the others. Fine to very fine (or better) shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A strongly attractive all-round example of this classic mid-1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better as a mono original. This age-defying item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): mainly due to creasing and natural crinkle. Originals included the fragile tracing paper style linings which is solidly intact and impressive as seen through two crisp and neat window circles. Only very gentle discolouration of the paper, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better for a very popular record into around 53-years-old. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and heavily pressed. A appearing very modestly played with due care on a better quality record player. Only very fine, wispy and light surface marks seen under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches whatsoever, viewed in average room light little even registers. Importantly, it plays superbly, that the most important factor bar none for me. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This famous album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything of note to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard, and revealing stereo system. I am certain this record has been played very modestly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
