Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition and judging by the lack of spindle wear has not been played very much. S1 is in superb condition and has only one obvious hairline that has no affect on the audio. S2 has a handful of faint hairlines and on track 3 there is a thicker set of radial lines that go around the vinyl which are slightly more obvious in 3/4 places but as can be seen from my audio grading below they have no affect on the audio. Strange really and perhaps they were created upon the manufacture. The vinyl still has a very healthy glossy sheen and has no scratches.
Play grading
There is hardly any lead in static on S1 and 'Two Of Us' then impresses with superb clarity and depth all the way through. It sounds as 'fresh' as the day when first released 48 years ago. There is no interference of any kind and easily grades as Mint the audio is immaculate from start to finish. There is not even a single dust tick on the fade out! 'Dig A Pony' equals that standard with sublime sound once more. There are 2/3 super quiet dust ticks but quite frankly they could easily be missed. The seque into 'Across The Universe' plays with perfect precision and then has audio with no crackle, clicks or pops. There is an absolute minimal amount of very light background static in a couple of places which is slightly more obvious on the fade out. You can hear it on the 'I Me Mine' intro also but this is just mega light static - it is not crackle! The remainder of the track plays with wonderful clarity and no distortion. 'Dig It' plays without fault and is another prime example of a vinyl that has only been lightly played. The quiet intro on 'Let It Be' is another great listen with only light intermittent static that is again very much in the background. Thus far there has not been a single click or pop on this side. This classic continues to play with sublime sound and the guitar solo is stunning with no distortion on the top level. There is perhaps just a hint of distortion towards the end but it is not to the detriment of the audio at all and still plays very clearly. 'Maggie May' ends the side with no obvious interference, just a little distortion again. Overall this side plays with superb quality and the only 'background' is a little distortion towards the end.
'I've Got A Feeling' has a little light static on the intro and then plays with excellent depth and clarity thereafter. There are no clicks or pops and the playback really is of a wonderful quality. 'One After 909' has no interference and the depth of the recording is evident here. The sonic quality is stunning and the bass plays so strongly. There is very light static on the 'The Long And Winding Road' but it is not crackle! There is one faint tick but apart from that this classic plays with very clear audio with nothing that intrudes on the listen. Intermittent static yes but it is in the background and non-intrusive in my opinion. Great sound for a genuine first press! 'For You Blue' has a small number of faint ticks on the intro and then plays with stunning quality to the end. A handful of mega light dust ticks at worst but a superb rendition nonetheless. With no static in the dead wax the quiet intro on 'Get Back' plays with 'high end' quality. From then on the bass is so strong and the depth and warmth is stunning. For a final track this plays to a wonderful standard and there is no distortion which is a rarity. There is also no 'background' on the quiet ending and fade out. A stunning finish.
In summary this first pressing plays to an excellent standard. A little mega light static here and there, nothing intrusive, but there are no clicks or pops on either side. Of course the laminated cover has the rare red apple on the reverse and aside from a little wear on the top edge is in excellent order.
The 'Red Apple' Cover
This rare G & L laminated cover has the red apple on the back cover and is in excellent overall condition. The top edge has the only obvious area of wear - there is a small 3cm area of rubbing but hasn't actually resulted in a split. Aside from that the edges and thin pinched spine are in great order with no other wear. The corners do have some rubbing, mainly on the two right hand ones. The opening edge has very little handling wear. The front cover is extremely clean with no marking, there is just a small laminate lift on the top left corner and a small crease top right which can also be seen on the back. The back cover is super clean with no marking either. For such a collectable cover it remains in excellent overall condition.
Inner sleeve
The plain white die-cut inner sleeve is in excellent condition with only some minor creasing.
The labels
They are both in lovely condition with no marking/writing and only a mega small amount of spindle wear. The matrix numbers can also be easily read on the very clean run out grooves.
