Fifty-three years ago this December, The Beatles released their sixth UK album ‘Rubber Soul’. This album offered the first true glimpse of John, Paul, George and Ringo moving away from the Pop songs that had kick started their career three years earlier towards singer-songwriters without peer, leading the vanguard that transformed this feature-length album into a singular work of art rather than a collection of singles, B-sides, and fillers. With Rubber Soul, the studio had become as much an instrument as the Hofner bass, Gretsch and Rickenbacker guitars, and Ludwig kit, a tableau onto and into which the band expanded the boundaries of their craftsmanship, embracing the kind of beliefs and influences that would change the face of popular music forever.
Rubber Soul has stood its ground as one of the best albums of all time for 52 years now, Rolling Stone ranked the Fab Four’s sixth studio album as No. 5 in their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Recorded in December 1965, the album shot straight to No. 1, spending nine weeks in the chart.
