THE BEATLES Love Me Do RED PARLOPHONE 1st plus early sleeve POP BEAT 1960
The Beatles, Love Me Do b/w P.S. I Love You.
1962 UK Parlophone Records 7" housed in company sleeve, 45-R 4949.
The earliest red label variant, with "Made in Gt. Britain" to labels and PT tax code embossed to A side label. 1N/1N matrix suffixes and GR / PZT 1 mothers/stampers to A side and T / PZT 1 to B side.
A fairly well worn issue, suitable really only as a shelf filler. Appearance is a FAIR, playback could muster GOOD at best.
Firstly, there is a very mild edge warp. This is not at all pronounced and causes only very mild visible undulation of the cartridge when the disc is being played. It has no noticeable effect on playback.
The 7" has not been cared for very well, and the surfaces display a network of fine hairline scuffs, with some marks being slightly deeper, although there are no ugly gouges. The surfaces otherwise still have a fairly acceptable gloss and have not become entirely greyed, but much of the original lustre has been lost. There are two smallish areas of greying, one to each side, which could be heat burrs or just ingrained muck, hard to tell.
As far as playback goes, there is continuous background noise throughout. This presents itself as a low to mid-level crackle, and whilst audible, it is never severe enough to engulf the tracks. There are luckily no loud or continuous clicks. The mentioned grey patches cause some scuffy type additions to the background noise towards the first half of the A side, which is also where the single is most noisy. Playback becomes a little better towards the second half of the A side, and the B side plays somewhat cleaner than the A side. There are no skips or jumps.
One saving grace with this issue is that it has relatively nice and clean labels. There are a few spider trail hairlines visible around the centre spindle areas, but nowhere near as bad as the surfaces might suggest, and the centre areas are not worn or whitened. There is very little visible in the manner of contact rubbing, and the silver print is still very acceptably bright and has not noticeably dulled. There is no loss to the labels and both sides are free of inscriptions or stains. Although only the A side is pictured, both sides are very similar in appearance.
The sleeve is top end VG. No loss, marks, tears or seam splits, but moderate overall creasing.
In summary an adequate shelf filler, but a far from perfect issue, which is still listenable to with reservations. The saving grace is the overall visual appearance which is very clean and tidy.
