THE BEATLES ‘PLEASE PLEASE ME’ ORIGINAL 1963 1ST PRESSING GOLD PARLOPHONE LABEL (Dick James credits)  VINYL LP

This has become something of a Holy Grail for Beatles collectors, the very first issue of the very first LP from 1963 on the gold label so coveted by those in search of this genuine Beatles, vinyl rarity.

Details: Parlophone 1963, PMC 1202,  (XEX – 421 – 1N & XEX – 422 – 1N, in  dead wax) Black & gold label with ‘Dick James Mus Co. publishing credit for “Please, Please Me”,  “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Misery”, “Do You Want to Know A Secret” & “There’s A Place”.

Sleeve condition: VG, though there is very little actually wrong with it; some wear at the edges and a bit bumped at the corners: aside from a tiny, ‘AH 30’ written to top left of the rear, the sleeve has no writing on it at all.  The rear is a little grubby though this looks more severe on the photo than it appears in ordinary light.  There is a 4cm split to the bottom at the front and there is a tiny amount of laminate and flipback missing from the bottom right of the rear.  The original, inners sleeve is still present complete with plastic liner.

Record condition:  The surface of the vinyl looks well worn with numerous light surface marking and some heavier marks.  Side two looks better than side one though aurally the vinyl would fit the VG category in the Record Collector’s Grading system in the back of The Record Collector’s Rare Record Price Guide2010.  Potential bidders should be familiar with that criteria before bidding.  Please contact me if anyone is in any doubt about this.

Side one has what looks like a couple of quite severe scratches on the last track but in fact are more scuffs than scratches and when I play tested this on my Rega  Planar 3 deck through Arcam amp and Castle speakers I could hear no evidence of aural defect from them.  It is, I guess, a testament to the quality of vinyl in those days that what looks like a fairly heavily used and worn record plays so well.  I would give the record the playing grade of VG.  It is completely flat and plays all the way through without a hint of mistracking or jumping and despite some background noise it delivers quite remarkable musical quality.  Visually it is somewhere between Good and Very Good- overall.

Please be aware that I have been trading in rare vinyl for 25 years and for over 10 years on ebay.  I buy and sell regularly in every type of vinyl and with rare records, most conditions.  Therefore, I take every effort to be as accurate and frank as possible with all my descriptions.  However, I would like to remind bidders that rare as this is, it is a used, I would say well-used, vinyl record from 1963.  Please do not bid in the hope that I have under-graded it.

Please note that the charges for overseas delivery include all handling, packaging, full insurance against loss or damage in transit and International Signed For status (or Airsure where available).
