ALMOST 50 YEARS ON, YOU COULD BE ONLY THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS (EARLY PRESSING) FAMOUS ALBUM FROM A PRIVATE SELLER!!
This auction is for a second MONO pressing of The Beatles’ ‘Rubber Soul’, catalogue no. PMC 1267. It comes in a Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patents Pending flipback sleeve with the nos. PMC 1267 PCS 3075 printed alongside the manufacturer’s name on the bottom r.h. corner.
The yellow and black label has the wording ‘The Gramophone Co. Ltd.’ and ‘All rights of the manufacturer………’ around the edge.The wording “Sold in the UK Subject to resale price conditions…..” can be found under the Parlophone lettering. The Tax Code embossed on label side two is KT.
The Matrix is XEX 579 -4 on side 1, and XEX 580 -4 on side 2. It is stamped A R G at 3’clock and 1 4 at 9 o’clock on side 1; and stamped A D H at 3 o’clock and 4 at 9 o’clock on side 2.
Taking information from thebeatles-collection.com and jpgr.co.uk websites I am certain that this is a 2nd pressing of Rubber Soul. By all accounts the 2nd pressing is the one to go for as the quality of the mix on the 1st and revised 1st pressings was not up to scratch. As to the record itself – I played it for the first time in many years on 5/2/2013 and can honestly say that nearly every track plays without a single scratch or static pop and crackle. The exceptions are a static ‘pop’ on tracks 4 & 6 side 1, and track 3 on side 2. With very close inspection under strong light there are only a very few visible (and inaudible) hairline marks on the playing surfaces which overall have a shiny sheen to them with no fingerprints. The labels have some spindle marks in a certain light, and very little spindle wear around the centre hole.
The sleeve shows FEW signs of its 48 years, despite having undergone a few house moves and temporary (dry) storage. There is a little softening to the lower right corner at the front and the openside edges are a bit rough to the touch, but the laminate is good and intact, the spine is firm with title printing intact. The flipbacks are securely glued still. The printing of the text box with track listing on the back of the cover is clear and un-marked but there are a few brown marks clearly seen in the photo. There is some darkening of the white background mainly along the sleeve opening, due to handling over the years and also very faint ringwear. Despite having always been stored upright there is no wear to the lower edge and no breaks to the laminate on any of the edges.
Bearing in mind the age of this sleeve it is still in remarkably good condition. The original EMITEX tracing paper lined inner sleeve has a few creases and some yellowing with age but is not torn or marked in any way.
I have owned this record from new! It has never been lent out nor taken to parties – I was always selfish like that. It has always been handled by the edges and never stacked on an auto-changer.
In conclusion, if you want to be only the second owner of this pristine piece of vinyl and not buy from a shop or dealer then you can bid with confidence. I am now reluctantly selling all of my collection of vintage vinyl from the 60s due to space limitations. Keep an eye out for further Beatles releases and John Barry Soundtracks, mostly first pressings.
