Label, Format, Info & Rarity: Parlophone – matt with gently textured surfaces. This has ALL the criteria of a ver first pressing – that a bold statement and here used correctly. ‘Sold in UK…’ and ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text. Embossed ‘K T’ tax codes on side two, and rarest of all – ‘Dr. Robert’ song title. This only on very first issues quickly changed to ‘Doctor Robert’. As can be clearly seen on side two, a ‘FACTORY SAMPLE’ ‘NOT FOR SALE’ sticker. This incredible copy came from a prized lot of very early and many demo and Test Pressing, many too rare and expensive for this small dealer to buy, including quite possibly the world’s rarest ever Rolling Stones Test pressing debut album. But who could resist this wonderful piece?, this is one of the rarest Beatles pieces I have ever had. The reason goes still further: when I say ‘first pressing’, I mean just that. This copy has the ultimate 1 G mother code on side one, side two has 2 G. Ultimate first stampers on two separate mothers which more than explains the Factory Sample sticker. Any 1 G mother/stamper is rare initself for any record, but for one that sold in vast numbers – and few sold more more than Beatles in the history of vinyl records – they are near impossible to find. Finding a 1/2 G/G takes the rarity still further with probably only a tiny few Sample or Test pressings ever made with them. Of course, this scarcer original stereo copy includes the 605-1 and 606-1 matrixes, again first ones, but stereo copies do NOT include the alternative mix of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’, that was unique only to the very first monos. What is guaranteed, matrix numbers, mother and stamper codes, as well as clear label information, CANNOT be disputed or put into any question. These are all machine punched, ultra clear and there for all to see. This is a 100% genuine very rare Beatles record and probably the rarest vinyl piece I have had by them. The record has only a tiny very minor surface marks that have NO SOUND whatsoever, it appears very lightly played only with any of the very few spindle marks being light, fine and faint. It has fantastic audio quality as well with little short of pristine sound throughtout, this being played, like all my records on a ruthlessly revealing Linn Sondek LP12. The Factory sticker also genuine, it is lightly transparent with NOTHING seen beneath but pure pristine label. The cover only gently aged but not a great deal to fault. It also has its original inner sleeve, in this case, a plain white one with ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. A known fact – hence a major reason why audiophile collectors want ‘G’ presings – is in most cases, they offer the ultimate in clean sound. New pressings better than more worn ones, and this wonderful first stereo delivers big time. With research, I found one other that was sold on the internet that meets the same credentials as this copy, but will another ever be offered again? These type of pressings were produced in tiny numbers and most – based on logic – will be in very poor conditions these days. The chances of finding another available one that looks so nice and plays little short of perfect is remote. So a very rare chance to own a very special copy of what many people consider to be the greatest long-playing record ever made.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks that hardly even show with normal full-on viewing. Hardly even any handling traces on the very revealing matt surfaces. The Factory Sticker neat and crisp and clearly has never been tampered with, removed or even picked at. Both the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes are immaculate, crisp and totally unworn and retaining full ink cover. All shown in close-up along with the much harder to find ‘Dr. Robert’ song misselling, this is unique to the ultimate first pressings, later changed to ‘Doctor Robert’. Fans and collectors will know the usual state of most 1960s Beatles records: dulled, grubby and scratched surfaces, with labels covered in a maze of spindle marks, enlarged holes – put simply – played to destruction. Finding this very rare genune first issue like this, goes beyond difficult. I always state on any Beatles album I offer, most standard issues are not rare, far from it as they sold in vast numbers. BUT, finding a 1 G / 2 G copy hardly played is a far different matter.

Stamper Codes: 1 G / 2 G [ultimate first press G stampers in the sequence]. These for each 1 and 2 mother. Potentially the rarest pressing ever made. To put this into context: most Beatles albums are seen with mother codes ranging into 2, 3 or even 4 digits and stamper codes the same. A typical pressing can be: 1 4 / R M H (and often way beyond).

Brief Artist & Album Info: For many critics, collectors, connoisseurs and record ‘experts’, the greatest album ever made, it’s influence, groundbreaking sounds, recording techniques and sheer brilliance of the songs gives Revolver a strong claim to this crown certainly within the ‘popular’ genre. It almost single handedly changed the face of popular music and it’s importance cannot ever be overstated. For me, even more groundbreaking than ‘Sgt Pepper’, this really did break the rules and set new boundaries of songwriting excellence. This really was the major transition in The Beatles sound which was started on the previous album Rubber Soul. The wider use of varied instruments including horns and strings, backward guitar sounds, experimentation and effects made for an astonishing experience and took their music into greater heights of the sublime. It took many by surprise – this really was all too much for some. Every song included is a classic, varied material with some truly beautiful songs, most will know this album anyway. But the final song, ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ is something quite extraordinary and has to be contender for the greatest Beatles song ever. Although this album has the famous Matrix 606-1, this track is NOT the alternative withdrawn mix, that was only the 606-1 mono version, which can be considered relatively ‘rare’. Although a predictably huge seller, finding a very little played genuine original stereo copy of ‘Revolver’ is now proving far harder. ‘Dr. Robert’ song labels (and in this case, also the cover) are known first issues, and here with the ultra rare 1 G / 2 G mother/stamper codes. More importantly still, it plays with superb sound and I hope my pictures do this copy justice. As stated, this came from a batch of amazing similar rarities, some simply out of my personal reach to purchase. Even offering this album is proving difficult for me, but as a dealer, I cannot keep all I buy. So a rare chance to own arguably the greatest Beatles and popular album ever made.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very famous cover, it was designed by Klaus Voorman and is as definitive as the remarkable album it encloses. A single format with a laminated front. The laminate wraps around the closed edges on to three large rear flipbacks. It has the same misspelling of ‘Dr. Robert’ as the label, again this was changed on the next print run. Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the ‘Patents pending’ next to this imprint. This copy includes the plain ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: One of the most famous covers in popular music history and this one still looks impressive. The laminate retains lovely shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and any creasing few and very light. Any mostly edge types that few covers, now fast approaching 50-years-old will escape. Under light, very light rim dulling seen, but with a 154 gram record inside all these years, that also near impossible to avoid totally, here at light as it almost gets. Very gentle darkening around the edges, but again, this only gives the merest hint of age and many collectors actually like that. A couple of tiny tip creases and any wear or grubbiness to the fine exposed strip on the right – which should always be present – minimal and light. I consider this cover to look very attractive with that light matured look, it will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: The back clearly is more vulnerable: the matt predominately black main panel shows little wear at all. A trace of darkening on the left edge with a little minor burring traces. Hardly any creasing and importantly, hardly any traces of fingermarks to the revealing matt surface. The flipbacks are all solid with minor gentle darkening that is so hard to avoid over a vast number of years. One gentle fine crack near the top left corner and a tiny few surface laminate creases. All the ends are clean and grime-free and any end burring largely absent at all, the odd little more than minuscule trace only. All the important imprint text fully protected and pristine. Note the close-up of the ‘Dr. Robert’ misspelling, this seen less often and again it was changed on subsequent printings making this a genuine first-made cover.

Top Edge: Unworn, mainly straight with smooth unscuffed laminate.

Bottom Edge: As above, even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with a more ‘rustic’ trim in manufacture. What I mean by this is, it was not manufactured with a precise sharp cut which is normal on this sleeve. So beware of ones that are razor sharp or have that right strip missing. Any thickening or burring is modestly light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge, and 100 per cent guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Equally neat and attractive, ever-so-slightly darkened with barely any real wear. Solid, straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has avoided scuffs or any noteworthy creasing or cracking. One microscopic trace only and no peeling, for good measure, the text very well centred as well. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture.

Corners: A couple of small tip creases but any rubbing tiny and very light. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Made in the era of quality, this is a work-of-art with a robust, solid build and with good weight. A really lovely one to look with only mild hints of it’s considerable age – personally, I have no issues with that whatsoever. Many Beatles fans will only settle for nigh-on perfection and this is not quite that. But for a cover around 48-years-old, this is still very impressive and looks lovely. The ‘Dr. Robert’ misspelling always one for collectors and many fans will enjoy owning this genuine first ‘Revolver’ stereo PCS cover.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT:or close to. This being the basic plain white unlined inner with ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. Only really marked down for age darkening, it has minimal creasing and just one tiny right hand edge repair for a neat split done by myself – you would barely even notice. I always feel it a good idea to do this if possible to reduce the risk of it widening in the future. This inner looks just right for a record this old, polite reminder of age I personally thinks adds vintage and authenticity to the genuine article.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with any surface marks fine, few and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. NO penetrating scratches and any visual blemishes purely superficial and non-sounding. In fact this vintage record plays superbly throughout with barely anything unwanted. A very pleasing visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. Without doubt, this has been played very little and in Beatles terms, hardly even run-in, most of these were heavily played and often trashed from being loaned-out or wrecked by very heavy tracking record players of the time. Visually a super record that should please many collectors – such lightly examples are at far more of a premium, and they hardly get earlier-made than this.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This 1 G / 2 G ultimate first pressing plays even above it’s high visual and grading with barely anything to really fault. Probably one of the most played, used and abused records ever made, to find quite possibly the earliest pressed copy you will find so little used – and certainly NOT abused – is very difficult indeed. Any minor surface blemishes are simply ignored and the breathtaking real stereo sound, which images beautifully, all strong and distortion-free – a factor never to be taken for granted on any Beatles record. All frequencies are sharp and clear throughout, even the difficult track on this album, ‘I Got to Get You Into My Life’, with it’s rasping brass that so often breaks up with clipping and distortion. This demanding and vulnerable song remains focused and sharp. The other challenging track is ‘Eleanor Rigby’ with it’s intense strings, plays equally well. Any surface sounds barely even registered, I play-grade all my records at a sensible volume (in most cases) and nothing was heard to spoil the experience. Absolute silence from an immensely popular vinyl record this great age is a massive ask, but this offers little other than clean unworn audio quality – this too being play-graded on a massively revealing Linn LP12/Naim system. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, an exceptional recording by any standards and even today this has amazing sound values. The stereo imagery, focus, separation and clarity is sublime and the production and sound techniques still ahead of their time. A masterclass in production and engineering, I hardly have the words to describe the quality of this album. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this sublime album. No digital alternatives will ever quite match or better the real thing, the format still has that warmth and expression no other format really does. This is exactly the way Martin and the Fab Four wanted you to hear it and this splendid copy does it nigh-on maximum justice.

End Piece: Any Beatles album I offer will be carefully selected from reliable sources, I never offer them lightly. These days I hardly even bother looking for them, knowing full well that most will be in poor conditions, heavy penetrating scratches, tatty covers and labels a maze of spindle marks and scrapes, obviously played into submission. Few want these and who can blame them? I prefer to wait for offers from reliable sources and I never buy any record I cannot audition prior to purchase, especially these vintage classics. I would rather offer just the occasional Beatles gem in very fine playing condition than loads of inferior sounding rubbish. A quality Very Good is my bare minimum on most-all Beatles albums but this is way above that for sound and looks. The landmark and powerful audio qualities embedded in these practically unworn stereo grooves can never be beaten – the sounds the band and Martin wanted us to hear. Stereo copies are a little harder to find but hardly impossible. But with all the credentials and criteria listed in detail above, this is an exceptional and genuine rare example in lovely all-round condition. The greatest popular music album ever made? – Quite possibly – this is pure genius in every respect.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
