THE BEATLES "Sgt. Peppers..." 1967 UK 1st MONO PRESSING WIDE SPINE, 'FOOLS' INNER, CUT-OUT SHEET, EX++ AUDIO
THE BEATLES
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
ORIGINAL UK PARLOPHONE (PMC 7027) FIRST *MONO* PRESSING (1st June 1967) OF THE BEATLES' LEGENDARY AND ICONIC "Sgt. Pepper's" LP HOUSED IN THE RARE *WIDE SPINE* VARIANT GATEFOLD SLEEVE ONLY EVER ISSUED WITH A VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF COPIES (before production was stopped by G&L, reputedly due to 'stacking' issues) AND THE SET COMES COMPLETE WITH THE BOTH THE ORIGINAL CUT-OUT SHEET AND RED/WHITE 'FOOLS' INNER - GREAT COPY, SOUNDS SENSATIONAL THROUGHOUT
TO QUOTE BEATLES SOUND ENGINEER, RICHARD LUSH: "The only real version of Sgt. Pepper is the MONO version. There are all sorts of things on the MONO, little effects here and there, which the STEREO didn't have."
PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH DEEP CUT GROOVES WHICH DELIVER ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING AUDIO - CLEAN, SHARP AND FRESH WITH A CRISP LOUD CUT
THE LP HAS THE FIRST BLACK/YELLOW PARLOPHONE LABELS WITH "THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD..." & 'SOLD IN THE UK..." TEXT AND EMBOSSED 'KT' TAX CODE ON SIDE ONE
MATRIX: XEX 637 - 1 and XEX 638 - 1
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 1/ARL and 7/ARL (very early press with the 1 mother still present on side one)
AND IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FULLY LAMINATED, WIDE-SPINE, INTERNAL FLIPBACK GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd."
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL RED/WHITE 'FOOLS' CUSTOM INNER SLEEVE (with 2 flipbacks and "Made in Great Britain" and "Patents Applied For" text) AND CARDBOARD CUT-OUT SHEET ("Printed in England")
Sgt. Peppers was the first "concept" album, although any link between tracks are pretty tenuous.
The record was the first not to be banded into individual tracks, with hardly any gaps between songs.
It was also the first to use the run-out groove, therefore leave the stylus on the record and it would chatter away endlessly.
The cover too, is the subject of a few "firsts",
It was the first to have the lyrics printed on the reverse.
The inner sleeve was also the first to be custom made, decorated in a design by Seemon and Marijke.
Plus the LP came with a set of Sgt. Pepper cardboard cut-outs, which include, a moustache, a picture card, some sergeant stripes, 2 badges, and a stand-up.
The album sold a quarter of a million copies in Britain in it's first week of release, and by the end of June had topped 500,000 sales. But it didn't sell it's One Millionth copy until April 1973, some 6 years later.
LABELS: The labels are clean and unmarked with very little wear round the centre hole and only moderate spindle traces - played but certainly not over-played and also extremely well handled evident from the beautiful, practically unmarked playing surfaces and the sensational audio it delivers
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces still retain their original deep, glossy sheen with no dulling and only a few very light and superficial marks - these have no audio consequence at all - the playback is superb
VINYL Audio: Outstanding MONO audio delivery on this first pressing with a crystal clear, deep, rich and detailed sound (and a superb loud cut) - very, very impressive indeed and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my records prior to listings) there are no scratches, no skips or jumps, no prominent surface noise and no loud clicks or pops - plays beautifully and cleanly throughout - the run-ins, track divisions (what there are) and quieter sections, including "She's Leaving Home" play beautifully with no interference. The whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with sensational clarity, no groove-wear, no distortion, sounds superb and is very critically graded EXCELLENT++ for audio (very impressive sound - virtually flawless) - fabulous copy
SLEEVE: The original G&L internal flipback gatefold is in EXCELLENT condition. There is virtually no edge wear to speak of and all text on the wide spine is clear and bold. There is a crease to the bottom corner (see photographs) but nothing major and all surfaces have a deep, deep, glass-like gloss to the laminate with very little rubbing - the sleeve still creaks when opened. There is a little 'bumping' to the corners but again, nothing major overall, a very fine example of this *wide spine* variant
INNER SLEEVE: The 'Fools' inner is clean, unmarked, factory-fresh and practically MINT but for the smallest beginning of a split to one of the side edges (but I do mean really, really tiny) otherwise, a beautiful example which has clearly seen very little handling. The LP is now housed - and will be posted in - a new inner so as not to damage the original during transit
CUT-OUT: Again, superb condition with no marks/wear- practically untouched - NEAR MINT
