Hello and welcome to the first of what will be myriad auctions of Beatles vinyl from beatles4sale2012; and to kick-off my auctions I am offering a genuinely scarce LP from New Zealand, an orange-Apple labelled pressing of "The Beatles" (aka, The White Album).
BACKGROUND
Following the premiere release, in New Zealand, of George Harrison's, "All Things Must Pass", a fiscally-minded employee of His Master's Voice (N.Z.) (later to become E.M.I. (New Zealand)) took the decision to utilise the leftover orange-Apple labels on Beatles and post-breakup albums.
The quantity of left-over orange-Apple labels was enough to provide labels for approx 300 copies each of thirteen Beatles and four post-breakup albums and created, in effect, a subset of NZ pressings unique in the world.
THE BEATLES (aka THE WHITE ALBUM) ON THE ORANGE APPLE LABEL
The album offered for auction is complete as originally issued and includes the 2 orange-apple labelled LP's housed in a standard double-pocketed sleeve, four standard colour pictures, and variation 2 of the censored poster which was issued with "The Beatles" in Australia and New Zealand between 1975 and 1988 (for detailed information on the Antipodean censored poster, visit http://www.beatlesaustralia.com/12_BEATLES_index.html )
No matter the choice of term used to describe the numbers in which this particular album was pressed - be it, 'scarce', 'rare', 'uber-stellar-mega-effoff rare' - there can be no dispute as to its extremely limited distribution.
CONDITION
LABELS: The condition and quality of the all-important orange Apple labels can be clearly guaged by the supplied pictures, which are scans of the labels of the actual records offered for auction. I would grade as EX but you be the judge.
VINYL: The average condition of the well-used vinyl is VG with a good deal of surface scoring evident to the naked eye. Side 1 audio response can only be described as 'crackly' throughout, but without any skips or sticks. (records played on a Denon DP-23F, with a stylus force of 2.0 out of 3.0). Side 2 fares better with signifcantly less crackle than S1 but still evident here and there. Sides 3 and 4 also has less crackle than Sides 1 & 2, and again no skips or sticks.
SLEEVE: The VG+ sleeve is an Australia-manufactured sleeve. 90% of "The Beatles" albums distributed in New Zealand were housed in sleeves imported from Australia - the result, perhaps, of budgetary considerations. Some age-related browning evident in areas of inner (see pictures)
POSTER: The poster (see notes above) is in EX condition.
PICTURES: All four pictures are present, each being in EX condition
