Label/Format: Parlophone (pressed by Decca) – intense black matt surfaces with lightly textured surfaces. These have the deep ring ridge distinct to Decca-pressed records, but still retain the ‘Parlophone Co Ltd’ rim text. All details seen on my pictures.

Label Conditions: Both generally clean and still attractive with spindle marks slightly on the lesser side of moderate (especially for one of the 1960s most popular albums). The record apart from a couple of clicks at the very beginning of side two, plays impressively.

Catalogue Number: PMC 1206

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 149 grams. A typical heavyweight record, made in the era of quality, this time by the very best in Decca.

Rarity: Few standard issue Beatles are rare, they sold in vast numbers, this album very much a case-in-point. So-much-so, this record was briefly sub-contracted to Decca and Pye to press extra copies to meet demand. These ‘contract’ pressings are see far less often and are quite prized by collectors.

Brief Info: The second UK Beatles album, with advance orders and sales, pressing companies could hardly keep up with demand. Some were contracted out to Decca, and a few to Pye Records to keep enough units in retailers. This the Decca pressing with its deep distinct ring label ridge and smoother record rims. Although a common record, these are seen less often. A brilliant follow-up to ‘Please Please Me’, this a very fine example, but not perfect with a couple of clicks at the very start of side two. Given what these early Beatles records were likely to be subjected to in terms of basic record players and stylus, this has more than survived that perilous period well and still offers impressive clean sound for most of entirety – a huge percentage would be happy to play even half as good as this with many trashed and unlistenable. Decca pressed records arguably the very best and hard wearing ever manufactured.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back on three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and fairly smooth. The front has the large ‘mono’ text as seen. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. This includes the heavyweight polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: An attractive front that gives scant clues of age. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and only quite mild dulling around the thick record’s rim area which few can realistically hope to avoid as a minimum. There are a three half moon creases towards the right that are close together and a light crease near the top edge. But those pretty much all away from the actual edges where there are the usual fine hairline types, but very few of compare to most seen. The famous black and white graphic still intensely dark and impressive. Given the considerable age, this front has fared very well indeed with a very solidly pressed record inside all this time.

Cover Back: The back has also fared well with any discolouration of the card mostly mild and light, mostly near the left opening edge. A gentle crease near the bottom left corner, that the only one on the actual card panel which has barely any rubbing or even rim impression. The three flipbacks are all solid, crisp and clean with all ends unburred or lifted. A few hairline creases only. So gently and quite politely aged only.

Top Edge: Smoothly laminated and with just one very small chip and no scuffs, still very white and straight.

Bottom Edge: Superb, barely anything to fault, impressive especially for the traditional storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This storage edge is clean, and still reasonably sharp with any thickening or burring reasonably light as seen viewed end-on, again, few will show less these days when left natural. This edge is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, close to as-issued. Solid and straight with miNimal hint of compression, the ends very gently tapered in manufacture, this quite subtle. Totally uncracked and smooth, all text is perfect and unworn, the white surface, still exactly that, white, not toned or yellowed.

Corners: Any tip wear tiny and light with very fine or better shape retained with no bashes, any creasing or definition loss small and light.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Being cover-protected for large part of its time and avoiding any major faults or damage, this is one that really does stand-out from the average, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): and arguably better, marked down for corner creasing, that apart, aged little. Beatles albums from this period initially had the polylined inners, these were replaced quickly to the tracing paper type ones. This one has two crisp undamaged window circles, the lining intact and still clear. Even the recessed wave-style top opening crisp and very sharp – all good indicators the record has been removed with reasonable due care. Three corners are creased, this often deliberate to stop the record sliding out. All edges unsplit with no repairs, it includes the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(+): and I consider this a somewhat harsh grading for one of the most popular mono albums ever issued – most seen are hardly worthy of a second look. Many, if not most, played to near destruction with deeply scratched, grubby, dulled surfaces. This is still a very fine example. Under strong light, mostly light surface marks are seen, mostly superficial and non-penetrating. Viewed in average room light, largely inconspicuous and still looks really nice. As stated above, it has two clicks almost at the very start of side two – but there is no jump or stick on my Linn LP12 Sondek and I foresee no issues on any turntable or cartridge worthy of a name. But this an untested and subjective opinion, my LP12 can track most anything. This is the only turntable I own, so I cannot test on another. That the most significant sound blemish on what proved to be an enjoyable play-grade. This has survived the ‘Dansette’ era well in terms of fine sound quality. The visual blemishes of which none are remotely heavy, mostly being fine and light, are ignored by my fine-tipped stereo stylus. Visually not for purists, but this very tough Decca-pressed record still delivers for looks and sound and will please many collectors, but not perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant piece of classic pop history plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault bar those two moderate clicks at the very beginning of side two. The culprit, a tiny mark found under a magnifier. This very well pressed, tough Decca contact pressing offers strong, full-on sound with a wide dynamic range with impressive detail. Any surface sounds minimal and this is a quality pressing with no tracking issues*. As stated, only play-tested on a high-end Linn LP12 turntable, and it tracked fine and tested over this beginning several times to be absolutely certain. There was no jump or stick on my equipment, but two moderate clicks but little else thereafter. The odd trace of contact sound between songs is so hard to avoid on a moderately played mono record of this age, but the music proved a lovely experience with all the warmth, detail and dynamics expected from this vintage classic. Any loss of clarity minimal, the odd hint on ‘Money’ near the very beginning being quite critical, this the most difficult song on the album and a known ‘problem’ track, but generally, this innermost song that concludes the album was also impressive (and fewer are these days). Nothing of any note (the two clicks apart) spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended to many collectors, but clearly not for the purists who want perfection at any cost.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
