Label/Format: Apple with matt gently textured surfaces, these with the very dark colour shades.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light, fine and faint spindle marks – certainly less than moderate – and no wear around the hole area. This mono record plays impressively, especially The Beatles songs who perform on all of side one.

Rarity: Few Beatles standard albums are rare as they sold in vast quantities. But more copies of this one sold in the stereo format which now was fast taking over the ageing mono mode. Finding these in better playing conditions is always a challenge, this copy plays impressively clean – side one superbly with little to fault at all – side two, the more fragile orchestral side, very well overall with any surface sounds minimal and faint.

However, this is no ordinary or ‘standard’ copy of this album as can be seen in my back cover close-up pictures. The back side of the cover has a major double colour plate shift in printing, making the famous cartoon graphic on this side look even more psychedelic. A huge printing error that will rarely, if ever be seen or offered again. Indeed it could even be unique. Having worked in the printing industry for nearly 40 years, I know such printing errors were nipped in the bud in quality control and discarded and destroyed. Few errors of this size ever made it out of the factories, and top-quality printers of album covers would very rarely print a cover incorrectly and even fewer would ever make it to a retailer for sale. Most Beatles album covers were made by Garrod & Lofthouse, especially at this time, but original Yellow Submarine sleeves were uncredited. The shifts on the cartoon plates mean a double image of incorrect colours where the 4-colour plates are out of register, also the famous red lines lower down (these quickly removed on subsequent printings) now appear as four – two in magenta ink (not red as they should be) and two in unique yellow that cross the black type and graphic up higher. Only the black and magenta plates have the correct register with the yellow and cyan plates too high. This is one of the most substantial album cover errors I have ever seen and certainly by a mile, the most interesting. Highly likely a unique cover and a first issue mono as well in very fine condition. A rare opportunity for Beatles fans and collectors to own something that potentially no one else will ever have or have seen before. A one-off, do not miss possibly one of the rarest Beatles album covers you will ever see. In my near 19 years of Ebay vinyl selling, this has to be one of, or even the rarest item I have ever seen or offered.

Brief Info: The tenth UK studio album by The Beatles and the last to be issued in a choice of the mono or stereo format – this being the rarer mono version – it celebrated it’s 50th birthday this year – can you believe this famous album is half-a-century old? It was the soundtrack to the animated film of the same name, and includes six songs performed by the band, including four brand new songs, the other two previously released were ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘All You Need Is Love’. Side two is occupied by a re-recording of the movie’s orchestral soundtrack by George Martin which I personally think is brilliant. As stated above and seen in my pictures, the cover has a major printing error with two colour plate shifts make the carton on the back appear VERY different. So a real collector’s piece that is quite unlikely to be seen or offered again. The set is in very fine condition and plays very well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate that covers all folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. First covers includes two red lines which were very quickly omitted on reprintings. These lines are present, but now four of them instead of two with the plate shifts. Printed and made in Engla, uncredited, includes the original one window hole soft paper black inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: To be clear, the front is printed totally to standard and correctly, it has no printing errors. The superb artwork is seen through clear, fresh and shiny laminate that has minimal dulling and no lifting. A tiny surface chip on the bottom edge and most of any creasing fine and light near the edges with a small few gentle and light half moons away from towards the right – these show very little. An impressive front that has aged little.

Cover Back: Possibly the rarest graphic you will find on a Beatles original album cover. The major plate shifts are clearly seen on my close-up pictures. A major printing error that will rarely be seen, few would have made it to shops for sale with most others destroyed – should any others have been made like this. To see four of the coloured band rules either side of the black text is incredible, as is the cartoon graphic itself. The bands should be red, but here seen in cyan and yellow. The matt back panel in terms of condition is impressive with any grubbiness gentle and light, so aged little with no rubbing, creasing or writing. All flipbacks are solid and clean with very few creases to their laminate or ends which have avoided burring. A unique and ultra rare ‘variant’ cover for specialist and Fab Four collectors.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Virtually the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Some light to moderate thickening, but still neat with no feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A splendid looking spine. Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends very gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs very small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no heavy knocks, any tip creases tiny and light.

Cover Summary: An amazing Beatles cover, scarce enough as a first issue mono, but with this incredible and massively unlikely printing error, very rare indeed. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: these Apple black unlined inners are very fragile indeed, and rarely seen without major edge splits and tears, this one remains virtually intact with just the odd light central thin but avoiding full splitting. These had just one window circle and made with soft paper, so they often rub and become woolly. The only creasing or scutting of note on this one is on the bottom edge and on top corner tip, the window circle is undamaged and crisp. With a heavy pressed inside for 50 years, this inner has also fared well.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy played a few times on all the evidence, but appearing mainly with due care with any surface marks very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. With so many Beatles and other popular 1960s mono albums found trashed and unlistenable these days, it puts cleaner more well-looked after copies like this in real perspective. Visually a lovely mono Apple record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This famous psychedelic Beatles album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The ‘Beatles’ side one plays superbly with hardly anything unwanted. The orchestral side two has minimal surface sound and most hardly any at all – the odd gentle click on orchestral music is near impossible to avoid as it has some quieter passages and is very complex – just like any classical record. Overall, a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early mono ‘first’ pressing, the mode soon to be phased out altogether as demand dropped. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am sure this record has been played only modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully quite handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. I consider all the four new band songs superb and arguably to this day, the album is still quite underrated. This will prove very difficult to find significantly better – and the cover possibly never will be seen or offered again with this printing error – and can be strongly recommended. Do not lose this one – once it’s gone – it’s gone.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
