Label/Format: Apple – original dark surface mono with matt lightly textured surfaces. As seen, side one has a factor sample sticker, original Beatles albums are rarely seen with them.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few light and faint spindle marks. This beautiful first issue mono record appears very little used.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: This is one of the scarcer original, standard Beatles albums. This was the last original Beatles album available in mono. By now, the mono format was largely on it’s way out, and those that still chose the single channel format, did so to play on mono record players. And most will know what that potentially meant. Conditions are always the paramount factor for Beatles albums, most who bought them played them heavily, and often on the most basic of record players. All vinyl fans and collectors will have seen worn-out, trashed examples of most of their 1960s records, regularly cover in swathes of grubby fingermarks, deep penetrating scratches and the grooves caked in debris and grime. I will never offer any record like that? Finding any mono record that appears hardly played is always the best news possible, and all evidence strongly suggests this has received little. It offers impressive clean sound, including the far more challenging orchestral side with very little unwanted. Indeed the orchestral side plays beautifully with hardly anything unwanted bar a couple or three very faint ticks towards the very end, this too on a loud passage and masks the minor blemishes still further. This copy so fine in fact, I had to put this to CD in this mode for my own future pleasure, I have rarely, if ever heard a first press mono Yellow Submarine that plays with so few blemishes. The cover is also very nice, again the odd small blemish, all details further down as usual. So although this record, predictably sold well, there are far less first press mono copies around, especially in such impressive visual and even more importantly, playing condition. Factory examples are especially rare and these usually get even rougher treatment and few will survive much better.

Brief Info: The movie was animated and very psychedelic – the album features six wonderful Beatles songs on side one, four being previously unreleased – side two is the original film score which was composed and orchestrated by George Martin, this side I feel vastly under-appreciated, it’s beautiful orchestral music that here plays superbly in the dynamic mono mode this record offers. The six Beatles songs are superb, all will know the title song of course. I have heard several copies of this one where the pressing quality is somewhat variable especially on the orchestrated side, often as later pressings but this rarer mono copy does close to maximum justice. The cover has the correct PMC 7070 number and those two red bands on the back which were dropped on subsequent printings. A very fine all-round copy with a very modestly aged cover and a very clean record, the black single window inner sleeve exceptional and unsplit – few ever are. A rare opportunity for Beatles fans and collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: and I feel it looks better still. A single format with front laminate that wraps around all folds and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. A true ‘Mono’ cover with the correct catalogue number and those two red horizontal lines as only featuring on the earliest examples whether mono or stereo. This includes the often elusive correct one open window hole black inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Lovely psychedelic cartoon artwork that most will be more than familiar with. The laminate retains very impressive shine, freshness and clarity with just a tiny lift on the top left corner tip that has a very small dink. Even under light, any dulling is little and light around the rim, this almost as light as its likely to get on a cover in it’s fiftieth year. Also very few creases with a tiny few near the edges, a couple of very fine and faint half moons that hardly register with normal full-on viewing. A gentle thumb semi-crease near the bottom right is also gentle and light. The cartoon graphic looks superb with deep colour and overall, this front has aged little. Given it’s vintage and popularity, this rarer original Beatles cover front will prove hard to find better.

Cover Back: With the two horizontal parallel red lines, this is a guaranteed original mono cover, these details were soon removed on subsequent printings as most collectors will know. Again, this remains attractive with only scant hint of age. Blemishes?, well a small dink on the same corner as per the front and a faint hint of a thumb crease on the bottom left edge – records have to be removed from covers and such minor blemishes will happen, this minimal, light and small. The most significant issue, although it again registers little, is a surface pull just above the PMC 7070 catalogue number on the right – the text unaffected and fully intact as seen. This very neat and only on a plain white area and relatively small and mild. It seems either a sticker or pen mark has been removed – I have no other information to offer on this, but it hardly even catches the eye and can, and does almost go unnoticed until scrutinised – indeed when I spotted it myself. Any discolouration to the main matt surface is only light to politely remind it’s half-a-century old, but generally this has been well looked after. The three flipbacks are very solid and sound with neat clean ends and barely a trace of burring. All fully intact with no damage or lifting, the mild top right corner crease the only aforementioned blemish. So a fine looking back to complement the attractive front.

Top Edge: Still largely straight, all very smoothly laminated with virtually no wear.

Bottom Edge: As above, even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, with most of any thickening on the front lower area, this only relatively modest and overall both these entrance edges are still quite neat. They are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, still quite straight with any bowing or compression gentle and light – the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. Just one ultra fine hairline crease, the laminate still very clear, smooth and solidly intact. The text fully present and perfect, also nicely centred as-seen.

Corners: The spine top has a quite a light dink as mentioned, the other three are still crisp and neat with any rubbing minuscule.

Cover Summary: Overall, a very fine example of this much rarer first issue mono cover, yes a few mostly light and minor blemishes, so not for ultimate purist Beatles cover collectors. But for those who have no qualms in being politely reminded of gentle ageing or handling, this is very likely to please. With most that surface in grubby, heavily creased, dulled and even severely damaged condition, it puts an attractive example like this into real perspective, and many fans and collectors will enjoy this very fine original.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an immensely fragile soft paper inner that is massively prone to tearing, splitting and wooliness. This was not lined and is rarely seen devoid of major edge splits and torn window. This is made with very soft, matt paper, the same type found in the ‘White Album’ and some other Apple albums so beware of similiar black inners being substituted, the solid side has side external flipback instruction. These fully intact and strong with no lifts or noteworthy creasing. Unusually, this is fully intact and has a crisp undamaged window, just the one on this design. In terms of wear, this has hardly any at all, and, almost remarkably, this has NO splits, tears or repairs. No hard creasing, any crinkle or rim impression modestly light. The edges have avoided rubbing or weakening, thus hardly any trace of wooliness to paper that seldom avoids it. This integral part of set will rarely be seen better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better for a popular mono record. The surfaces clean with fine shine with any surface marks mostly fine and faint as seen under bright light. Just one ultra fine mark at the very end of side two emit 3 or four very gentle ticks, and even these are mostly lost in the volume of the orchestra music as the album ends. Few will have fewer than this – the record plays so almost all beautifully, so-much-so, as stated, I recorded this to disc for my own future listening. Something I only do on precious originals up to the standard I want, and this easily qualified. Any gentle patchy dulling purely within the pressing and it does nothing. We all know the state these mono classics show up in these days, and few will have less evidence of use than this, and clearly this has suffered no disastrous stylus drops or jolts that will in most cases write-off any mono record. This a very impressive copy and the sound even better still, it should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This much rarer first press ‘Factory Sample’ mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. That includes the very challenging and difficult instrumental side two. Complex orchestral music and the associated jagged and finer grooves, are even more intolerant of heavy stylus abuse from early equipment, hence just a few plays on the most basic record players, or even one play with a chipped or worn stylus can almost make them sound unlistenable. Only a full-play grade will confirm fine clean sound – guess-work offers nothing – groove wear and distortion is the hidden peril of early mono records. This copy has strong, very clean sound and suffering no abuse or accidents from those vintage Dansettes and the like. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Blemishes?, well one millisecond contact sound on one joining groove, quite why not sure. And as stated already, three or four very gentle ticks near the very end of side two, but these on a loud orchestral finale as the album nears it’s end, so also a very minor blemish indeed. There is little else to fault and even my CD copy I made for my own use sounds amazing on my big digital system. The details and dynamics of the earliest pressings will amaze anyone who has yet to experience it – the mono presentation of the sound still the choice of so many Beatles fans. As a note: this was the last Fab Four album issued on the mono format and it does present the music differently. Any surface sounds on this copy are minimal indeed and silence on arguably the most difficult Beatles album is near impossible, especially in mono, but this has hardly any and was a delight to play-grade. But few available copies will match or outperform this very pressing Factory Example significantly I feel certain. The ‘Beatles’ side plays with impressive clean sound and was a real joy, the instrumental side the same, and few ever do. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has avoided arm drops or jolts, very well pressed with no tracking issues* or other inherent pressing sounds. Hardly anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total ‘perfection’ is mandatory – and good luck finding one of those in this first issue mode.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
