Artist or Band: BONZO DOG BAND
Album Title: Tadpoles.
In the 60s, Dutch pressings were often put in UK sleeves. This is one of these: Original Dutch pressing on the black Liberty label from 1969 in the original UK gimmick sleeve. Has the insert as well. The record is in EX(-) condition and the sleeve is in EX+ condition.
Brief Artist & Album Info: Originally formed as a 20s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their niche elsewhere. This was their third album and by this time, had dropped the ‘Doo-Dah’ from their name. Still the British kings of the bizarre around this time, comedy and satire are blended with idiosyncratic jazz-rock and their appearance and style is not a million miles away from the early Mothers of Invention that recorded around this time too. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became quite popular in the late 60’s and even had regular TV appearances on programmes like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’ (with reference on this cover) and even a hit single followed with ‘The Urban Spaceman’ (included on this album). The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué but rarely ever as smutty or scathing as Zappa or The Fugs and the humour flowed with all its typically British style with Stanshall in supreme form here. Wackey, zany, inventive and original, this is great entertainment and this is arguably the band at the peak of their powers – all three of their early albums are truly essential.
Musicians: Vivian Stanshall – trumpet, lead vocals; Neil Innes – piano, guitar, lead vocals; Rodney ‘Rhino’ Desborough Slater – saxophone; Roger Ruskin Spear – tenor sax, devices; ‘Legs’ Larry Smith – drums; Dennis Cowan – bass, vocal.
