Review:
“Sandinista is the ultimate Clash record. It is a family business where all individuals are at the peak of their art. It is wide open to all cultures.
The Clash had chosen Mickey Dread as producer but Mick Jones got involved as well in the search of this new sound and they came up with the Bankrobber sound. When listening to Sandinista the bass is upfront, so are the drums. The cymbals could be right inside your ears. The keyboards are often heard very distinctly, saxes and horns here and there. This is reggae sound, soul and jazz but rock guitars are nowhere to be found on the vast majority of songs. Even on “Somebody Got Murdered” where guitars really rock you can not hear them so well as Mick Jones sings it like if it was a ballad in a very soft voice which is pushed in front of everything else in the mix.
Mikey Dread, Lee Dorsey, Mose Allison, Diana Ross, Vince Taylor, these were major influences for Sandinista. The band could still rock through “Police and Thieves” on stage but in the studio, they were now into explorations. It has often been stated that Mick Jones was the driving force behind Sandinista musical directions but it is hard not to see the wonderful openness of Joe Strummer, his way to connect with other people. Sandinista is Joe and Mick connecting to all people everywhere and all artists, past and present.
In Sandinista you will find multiple layers of sound, multiple takes. Hard work is what it is. Musically it went in all directions - rap, rhythm and blues, reggae, ballad, rock, rockabilly, waltz, jazz, reggae, dub and that was only the first of the three LPs! World music was invented right there.
It is fascinating that Sandinista would keep such a strong unity. This has a lot to do with Topper Headon's performance. Headon had a jazz background and he certainly was the most gifted musician within the Clash. His drumming throughout the record is magnificent. Never the same beat twice.
Paul Simonon came with his sound and his style. Actually not so different from what he was doing on London Calling or even on Give Them Enough Rope. The story behind Magnificent Seven (essentially a Blockhead song as it was partly written by Noman Watt-Roy and Mickey Gallagher) does not do justice to Paul's bass lines which are consistent throughout the record and very convincing on reggae tracks. He is not Bootsy Collins, nor does he work at Funkadelic - he works at the Clash.
When asked about about Sandinista, Joe Strummer praised Mick Jones’ musical qualities and said he did not have any regrets related to Sandinista. That was in 2002, some years before the iPod revolution, but he could not see one song on this triple LP that did not belong there, “not one”.”
