    The Clevers were outstanding since its inception. While The Jet Blacks had Gato as their ‘guitar hero’, The Clevers had a different kind of hero in the shape of Manito, a multi-musician young man hailing from Vigo, Spain, who had migrated to São Paulo when he was 9 years old. Manito took to saxophone... so The Clevers’ records were mostly built around a saxophone melody line. Their first single ‘El relicario’ was a smash hit. ‘El relicario’ a traditional Spanish tune written in the 1930s was transformed into an uptempo twist that made an impossibilty for people to keep still.
    ‘Maria Cristina’ was their second hit while the market was flooded by The Clevers’ 78 rpms, 33 rpm singles, extended-plays and long-plays. They were a new sensation on TV too.
    ‘Il tangaccio’, a magnificent cover of an Adriano Celentano’s Italian original went straight to number one in early 1964, consolidating the Clevers as the hottest act in the land. They could play tango, they could play anything!
    The Clevers were the closest thing we Brazilians had to The Beatles... it’s funny to notice that Beatlemania was already raging in England but was utterly unknown here or the USA. The Clevers were zany, they were multi-talented, they were really clever. The only difference was that they did not sing! The Clevers were an instrumental band.

    The Clevers story

    The Clevers were arguably the most popular rock instrumental band in the early 60s. It was formed in early 1963 and took Brazilian charts by storm with 'El relicario' [an Spanish evergreen penned by José Padilla in 1918] played as a twist which was followed up by 'Maria Cristina'. 

    The Clevers suddenly were the hottest act in town being constantly present in TV shows and live performances.

    'Il tangaccio' was their third hit single. They recorded two albums and were on their way to  star their own TV show when Rita Pavone, a famous Italian rocker, asked them to accompany her during her Brazilian tour. It was a partnership made in heaven. So successfull was their liason that Pavone's manager took them along to Italy to accompany her in her 1964's summer tour . 

    Back in Brazil, The Clevers had a disagreement with Antonio Aguillar, their manager, who owned the Clevers' trade mark and were forced to change their name for Os Incriveis.

    O grupo surgiu em 1963 por idéia do guitarrista Mingo, que

    saíra do conjunto The Jet Blacks e sugeriu a Antônio Aguilar a formação de um novo conjunto, que foi registrado com o nome de The Clevers. No mesmo ano, foram apresentados pelo cantor Francisco Petrônio a Diego Mamuleira, o famoso cantor e compositor sertanejo Palmeira, diretor da Continental, que os contratou. No mesmo ano, apresentaram-se no programa Antônio Aguilar e gravaram o primeiro disco, interpretando "Afrika" e "El relicário". O sucesso do compacto levou a Continental a lançar o LP "Encontro com The Clevers".

    No mesmo ano receberam da Revista do Rádio o troféu "Favoritos da nova geração" como o melhor conjunto do ano. Apresentaram-se também no programa "Encontro com a juventude", na Tv Excelsior de São Paulo. Em 1964 lançaram o LP "Os incríveis The Clevers", pela Continental, que tornou-se um dos mais vendidos do ano. Em julho do mesmo ano embarcaram para a Itália, a fim de acompanhar a cantora Rita Pavoni em excursão pela Europa. Em seguida gravaram "Datemi um martello", que já havia sido sucesso na voz da cantora italiana, que ficara noiva de Netinho, o baterista do grupo. No mesmo período adotam o novo nome de Os Incríveis e fizeram excursão à Argentina.

    Em 1965, apresentaram-se no Uruguai, ao lado do cantor americano Neil Sedaka. No mesmo ano participaram na TVRecord, em São Paulo, da estréia do programa "Jovem Guarda" e também lançaram o LP "Os incríveis", que trazia a primeira versão da música "O Milionário", grande sucesso instrumental do grupo.

    Em 1966 viajaram para fazer shows na cidade de Liverpool na Inglaterra. A viagem foi a bordo do navio Princesa Leopoldina e, durante o persurso, realizaram shows todas as noites. No mesmo ano gravaram, em Londres, a música "Mother put sugar on me", apresentada na época como samba, e cuja versão, "Mamãe passou açúcar em mim", foi gravada com grande sucesso por Wilson Simonal.

    No mesmo ano,lançaram outro LP com o título "Os Incríveis", cuja capa com a foto do grupo sobre fundo amarelo foi, anos mais tarde, utilizada para relançar o quinto LP, com o título de "O Milionário".

    Em 1967 estreou nos cinemas do Rio e de São Paulo o filme "Os Incríveis nesse mundo louco", gravado no navio Princesa Isabel, durante a viagem para a Inglaterra no ano anterior. No mesmo ano, apresentaram-se para o rei Olav V da Noruega, durante recepção do governador de São Paulo Abreu Sodré. Também, na mesma época, fizeram grande sucesso com "Era um garoto que amava os Beatles e os Rolling Stone", versão de Brancato Júnior.

    Em 1968 receberam o troféu Chico Viola como "Conjunto intrumental da juventude".Na mesma época apresentaram na TV Excelsior o programa "Mundo louco". No mesmo ano viajaram para apresentações no Japão e ganharam o troféu Roquete Pinto.

    Em 1970 gravaram "Eu te amo meu Brasil", de Dom e Ravel, que foi muito identificada com o regime militar, o que acarretou em perda de popularidade para o grupo. Ainda gravaram alguns discos em fins da década de 1970 e realizaram alguns shows pelo país, com variadas formações, sem, entretanto, lograr mais o mesmo sucesso anterior. 

    Em 2001, participaram de show no Boulevar em Nova Parnamirim no Rio Grande do Norte, juntamente com as bandas The Fevers, Renato e Seus Blue Caps e Pholhas, relembrando antigos sucesso da jovem Guarda.Em 2005, o grupo participou de diversos eventos e shows comemorativos dos 40 anos da Jovem Guarda. Nesse ano, participaram, em São Paulo, das gravações de CD e DVD ao vivo, ao lado de Erasmo Carlos, Wanderléa, Golden Boys e outros expoentes da Jovem Guarda. Ainda na esteira das comemorações, seus integrantes participaram da gravação do DVD dos Originals, grupo formado com ex-integrantes, do grupo e também dos grupos Renato e seus Blue Caps e The Fevers. O CD/DVD foi lançado na FENAC Barrashopping, no Rio de Janeiro, em agosto.
