1956 Indiana dowop indie
Here’s a regional dowop record that you might have missed out on if you weren’t haunting the local record shops around Indianapolis in the early ‘50s. The group is the Counts, but you might have seen any one of their ten records on DOT between 1953-1956. Well this is something that comes after that – this is their local release after they left Dot.
They were all high school students when they got together, and the group was: Chester Brown (tenor lead), Robert Penick (first tenor), Robert Wesley (second tenor), Robert Young (baritone), and James Lee (bass).
They cut that long string of singles for Dot without any success, and after two years, Dot didn’t continue with the group. Late in 1956, they went into the studio one more time, this time with the release coming out on the microscopic, and local, label Note Records. The tracks here are “Sweet Names” and “I Guess I Brought It All On Myself.”
Of all of their records, this is the rarest, and most mature of them all.
