          This is one of the rarest and hardest-to-find items in Phil Spector's catalog , itself already overloaded to breaking point with rarities, misprints and curiosities of all kinds. What I have here is the Crystals’ third (and final) album for the 'Philles' label . The album, originally issued in 1963, was unavailable in any way, manner or form in more than four decades. The wall of sound - a production method patented by Phil Spector,  which involved - inter alia - torturing artists for maximum effect (just ask Tina Turner whose bra fell apart during the recording of "River Deep, Mountain High") does not get any more vivid or palpable than here. This is a proverbial fortress of sound, consisting of multitude of overlapping layers of voices, sound effects, cascades of rhythm and ornamentation. A joyful, luscious, retrogressive, a*al-retentive, listening experience, in original BACK-TO-MONO format.

This is the RAREST of the Philles LPs to see official release, The Crystals Sing the Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is valued at $700-900.  The three tracks on   this LP sung by the Ronettes are "Hot Pastrami", "Mashed Potato Time", and "The Twist.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++ (VG+++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)    (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
