THE DAMNED
NEW ROSE
ORIGINAL GERMANY 1977 - STIFF RECORDS 17 791 AT
Rare original German New Rose in great picture sleeve.
I've tried to take as many pictures as possible to illustrate the condition, with further details below. The German New Rose is the rarest and most desirable Stiff era 7" release by The Damned other than the Japanese Neat Neat Neat, although I guess the spate of coloured vinyl reissues have resulted in the loss of some of it's mystique.
The sleeve of this release is notoriously difficult to find in mint condition, as the paper stock used is extremely thin and prone to creasing and wear. The sleeve of this copy has three main faults: at the front, top right, there is a red cross in marker pen through the "D" and part of the "E" in "THE DAMNED" (see picture 10). There's slight colour touch with some loss of gloss in the same area, around the "N" of "THE DAMNED" (again, picture 10). Other than that, the front of the sleeve is pretty nice, just the inevitable outline of the record where it had been stored in the sleeve at some point. The rear of the sleeve has a small area of print loss in the middle of the "s" & "t" of "first" (see picture 9). Other than that, again, it's pretty nice, with really just the mark where the record has been, which is mainly noticeable only at the upper left. Overall, I'd guess the sleeve would grade VG+.
The vinyl, which had been sold to me as mint, clearly has signs of having been played (understandable, I guess), and there are light surface marks, most likely from being removed and replaced in the sleeve, none of which affect play. Having recently got a record player, I gave it a spin for the first time, and it plays perfectly, with a hint of a pop in the groove about a second or so before New Rose starts playing. The labels are perfect. Overall, I'd guess EX-.
So, a pretty nice example of a record that doesn't come up for sale all that often (the original, anyhow, heh).
