Label Conditions: Both very clean and still fresh and attractive. A copy played a number of times with moderate but mostly reasonably fine spindle marks. A very respectable copy that many will enjoy but not for the very discerning collector.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 152 grams. One of the heaviest stereo copies I have held.

Rarity & Detail: Rare: I consider a UK original stereo copy of this record far harder to find than the original mono or any other Doors album for that matter (and none are easy as originals). The record has clearly been played several times going by the spindle marks which is only a loose guide. The playing surfaces are both impressive and very clean indeed and with hardly a noteworthy mark or blemish to be seen – so without doubt, this has been played with utmost and carefully enjoyed. Any sound degrading is very slight indeed, any present mostly on the very first song with occasional clipping traces, this being played on ultra sensitive equipment. A few tiny hints on the ‘Light My Fire’ at the very end where the tracking angle becomes more critical. Side two plays impressively well and ‘The End’ apart from a tiny few light ticks, unusually well as this has quiet passages and is notoriously difficult. More of these tend to show up with American thick non-laminated card covers that wear very badly with splits, rubbing and ring wear. This stereo copy has the fully laminated UK cover which are much harder to find. These still have their own issues on such thin card and this one has some creasing but still blows away the US version. So a very nice UK original that does give clues to it’s considerable vintage, but many fans and collectors will enjoy this one.

Brief Info: From my early teenage years when I first heard The Doors, this album and band totally blew me away and even today I regard this album as one of my favourites ever. A groundbreaking album that introduced the world to James Douglas Morrison, one of the most iconic and greatest vocalists ever. A man who tragically died far too young, who knows what other wonderful albums the band and he could have made given the chance? I love all seven of the official Morrison Doors albums but this debut is extra special and musically still sounds as powerful and fresh as it did back in the 1960s. Most rock fans will know this album well already but special mention must be made for the incredible finale: ‘The End’ is still one of the most haunting and powerful tracks ever written. Building slowly with real eeriness and atmosphere, this is Morrison at his very best. The climax into madness at the end is as powerful as anything that has ever been put to vinyl – Jim explodes into frenzy before then mellowing down again to the gentle ending. This monumental epic was used to brilliant effect on the Francis Ford Coppola movie ‘Apocalpse Now’ back in 1979 and bought this song and band even more the public’s attention. This is my first experience of this on stereo original for quite some time and it was a real eye-opener. More detail, dynamics, and stand-out basslines that seem more muted or even missing on later pressings or formats. These have the correct sound, the correct production, the correct mix, even with the odd minor sound blemish or click or two, this will blow away most others. For most, this has fantastic sound with depth and dynamics, the sonic delivery of the songs is unbeatable on other formats. Clearly this has been played a number of times, but without doubt carefully as this has so few visual blemishes to two clean and shiny playing surfaces. A little light wear to the opening song but being played via ultra sensitive and revealing equipment and mere traces elsewhere. Few 45-year-old records will not give a few clues to it’s vintage. For those who discovered this band and album from the outset, most would have played it extensively – and why not? – this is still one of the greatest vinyl experiences of this era. Regarded more as an underground act with so many American acts ignored or not known at this time, few of these would have sold, especially in stereo. So if a little gentle reminder is okay for what you are actually listening too, this is a very fine copy that many will treasure. But not for the perfectionist who wants everything perfect, so read below and make your choice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): a single fully laminated cover made with thin and flimsy card. Manufactured in Great Britain by Poly Records Ltd, London. As stated, this is more often seen with the American import cover which are rarely seen devoid of heavy, ugly wear and damage.

Lamination – Front & Back: Even though laminated, this is far from exempt from issues and wear. The main issue with this one is creasing with several light to moderate ones. The main one on the back left – my camera flash has washed these out but ARE present, so be aware. Being honest (as I always aim to be), my pictures may flatter this a little. Lifting can also be an issue as the laminate contracts and tightens over the years. But this has fared very well in that respect with only some neat lifting on the spine edge of the front that remains solid and barely cracked. This I do not consider wear, but almost the norm. Under light, some friction dulling is seen, but both sides retain an impressive shine and clarity with more than decent freshness. Even with issues, mostly being scattered creasing, this will still better the US version which are somewhat dull, even bland in comparison. The classic early Doors artwork looks far more vibrant and attractive and this is a more than very respectable example of this elusive and scarce stereo UK cover.

Top Edge: Little to fault on this still straight and barely worn thin edge.

Bottom Edge: This looks very impressive indeed with little to fault at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Crisp, neat and very sharp, this guaranteed untrimmed – both sides have a a wider than average non-laminated strip which is absolutely correct on this cover. Hardly even a hint of thickening or burring at all, the records enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A thin and flimsy spine which has compressed over the years. So the text is seen more now via front viewing which is hardly unusual on this delicate spine. Straight with barely any real wear, fully laminated with a few ultra fine surface creases, all the text is unworn and perfect. Try finding that on the US version.

Corners: All in unusually fine and neat condition with minimal traces of tip rubbing. No erosion and all retain excellent or better shape. I am pretty sure there is no tipping-in or enhancements.

Cover Summary: Only marked down from full Excellent by the creasing. Not excessive and the front especially is still very attractive, a classic cover giving clues to vintage, but more than highly respectable – and I am possibly not doing this justice as I am a very fussy person myself. Not for the highly discerning, but many will enjoy it if some creasing is acceptable.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner that has aged little. The record was in a replacement lined inner sleeve thus this has survived well. Two neat window circles, clean and devoid of any creasing worthy of note. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this based purely on the high quality visual of the playing surfaces which are very clean, with a lovely shine, intense black and heavily pressed. Any marks are tiny, few and very light, but the evidence of the labels have to tell me this record has been played a number of times, but for certain, with great care and most likely on a more sympathetic record player. This album was available in mono, so those who chose a stereo copy back in 1967 were more likely to have a stereo system to play it on. Those tracked far lighter and inflicted less wear and damage to the record. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This legendary masterpiece mostly plays to it’s very fine visual grading with little to fault. As stated above, a little patchy clipping of the high frequencies on the opening track and traces at the very end of side one. The odd light click or two is near impossible to avoid with any surface sound minimal. I remind, I play all my records on an LP12 which is ruthlessly revealing and still one of the world’s most clinical turntables ever made. I did not expect ‘perfection’ from this record, and being honest it exceeded my expectation and little spoilt my enjoyment. Just light reminders of what I was listening too – a 45-year-old record – not a clinical CD or digital remaster. At times, this totally blew me away with wonderful detail and delivery of the music. With due care and future usage on a quality system, this will not wear any further, this just has the very beginnings of the lightest possible sound degrading on the odd song, but little more than that. If this failed to please me, and all songs practically did with just the slightest reservation on ‘Break on Through’, I would not offer it. Most of side one was great and side two had little to fault at all. One of the best auditions of ‘The End’ I have heard, so many badly scratched, worn with crackle and distortion, this proved very enjoyable with just the odd couple of three gentle ticks that few will avoid totally. So like the cover, not perfect, but very enjoyable and again many fans will enjoy it. A rare UK stereo and scarce opportunity, musically, for me one of the greatest ever, and for condition, it merits high recommendation – but not the for perfectionist or audiophile listener.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
