Description
According to the Library of Congress holdings of the Columbia Paperwork Archive, ML4001 is the first of 85 classical 12 inch LPs released in June 1948. The entire release is in the 1949 Columbia Record catalog dated August 1948. The release included the 85 twelve inch classics ML 4001 to 4085, 26 ten inch classics, ML 2001 to 2026, 18 popular ten inch, CL 6001 to 6018, 4 juvenile ten inch, JL 8001 to 8004 and a pair of 2 LP boxed sets, LaBoheme and Hansel & Gretel, SL-1 & SL-2. All the 85 original LPs were pressed in vinyl plugs of over 210 grams, with the dark blue labels shown and packaged in the top-open blue and white kraft paper envelopes sporting the Steinweiss greek column (not a 'tombstone') taken from his earlier work on the 78 rpm album MM577 which was also the Milstein/Mendelssohn work. These flimsy envelopes were quickly replaced by side-opening cardboard sleeves which became the industry standard. These sleeves came in red, green, blue, and yellow but still with the Steinweiss inspired greek column. Cover art slowly began to appear, first as a 3 inch square color print and the LP in a circle, and finally with full sized slicks. The ML 4001 can be found in all of these different packages.
It's hard to imagine an LP collection being considered complete without the Columbia ML 4001. Thanks for lookin'.
